CUT BACK TO:

[INT. NSA - RESEARCH LAB]

DIANE: (v.o.) Oh, my god. We got a problem.

(After the shoot out, the SECURITY GUARD checks on JAKE, then turns away. JAKE looks down at his inner arm where contaminated broken glass from the flask has cut him. The silver-gray liquid moves into and under the cut in his skin.)

CUT TO:

[INT. RESEARCH LAB]

(DIANE shows LOU and KYLE the monitor with the x-ray showing JAKE'S spinal column. She points out the nanites on the monitor.)

DIANE: You see how the nanites have positioned themselves along his central nervous system.

CUT TO:

[INT. HALLWAY OUTSIDE RESEARCH LAB]

DIANE: (v.o.) This guy can interface with technology. He's like a universal remote, and every one of his body functions is enhanced.

(JAKE has his hand positioned above the security key pad.)

(Quick CGI POV to: Camera zooms in through the number display, in through the wiring and various electronic pulses till it reaches the lock. The metal wires inside the key pad flick up giving the correct combination to unlock the door. End of CGI POV.)

[VARIOUS CLIPS]

* JAKE inside the CHEMDYNE RESEARCH FACILITY. He manipulates the Cryoplant Turbin Control and activates the Turbines. A red WARNING APPROACHING CRITICAL sign flashes on the monitor.

* The pipe bursts and the liquid nitrogen hits ERIC VAUGHN full force in the chest, propelling him backward into the control panel.

* ERIC VAUGHN has his gun on JAKE who jumps up to the second level of the plant's main floor.

CUT TO:

[INT. NSA - DEPUTY DIRECTOR LOUISE BECKETT'S OFFICE]

LOU: (to JAKE) I've just been authorized to create a special ops team with you at its core.

(Realizing that this is his opportunity ... JAKE smiles.)

FADE TO: END OF PREVIOUSLY ON

FADE IN.

[EXT. SPACE]

(Scene opens out in space as a satellite circles the earth. Its telemetry beeps. The satellite travels away from the camera.)

(Dissolve to: The camera pulls back from the clouds, then pulls back to show the city buildings.)

CUT TO:

[EXT. STREET -- DAY]

(JAKE is running down the middle of the street as fast as he can. He runs off of the street onto the sidewalk.)

(He turns off the sidewalk between buildings. He glances behind him.)

(A yellow car pulls out of the garage and across the street directly in front of JAKE. Too late! He turns back to face front and just barely sees the yellow car. JAKE jumps over the yellow car in a single bound. The yellow car brakes.)

(The driver pulls down his glasses to watch JAKE jump over him. His mouth forms in the shape of an "O" as JAKE lands on his feet on the other side of the car.)

(JAKE stands up, turns to glance back at the driver. He nods in embarrassment and apology at the driver who turns to look at his friend next to him. Not sparing any more time with them, JAKE takes off down the back street.)

CUT TO:

[SIDEWALK -- CONTINUOUS]

(JAKE continues to run at breakneck speed down the sidewalk. At the intersection directly in front of him, JAKE sees the crosswalk sign at "DON'T WALK". He stares at the sign, willing it to change ... )

(Camera zooms toward the DON'T WALK sign, into the tubes and wires, into the electronic components where it reaches the source control panel and changes from red to green. Camera zooms backward out from the components and through the wires to the WALK sign.)

(Without breaking his stride, JAKE runs across the street.)

(Cut to: JAKE runs across the sidewalk, past parked cars. He turns up the walk and finally slows down.)

(He stops and smiles.)

(He looks over at the PUBLIC LIBRARY and sees SARA walking down the steps. She walks out of the building.)

(JAKE smiles.)

(SARA looks up and sees him.)

SARAH: Jake.

(He walks up the remaining distance to her.)

JAKE: Sarah.

SARAH: What are you doing here?

JAKE: Oh, I'm just researching some case law. Privacy issues, e-mails, NSA stuff.

SARAH: Well you're not going to get anywhere today. It-it's Sunday. The library's closing.

JAKE: (groans) Oh, man. I just ran all the way across town.

(He points behind him then turns back to SARAH.)

JAKE: What are you doing here?

SARAH: Ugh, soybeans. The farm bill. I thought I told you this.

JAKE: Oh, right, right, right. Well, uh, I'm free. You want to go get some coffee?

SARAH: Sure, yeah.

JAKE: Great. Okay.

CUT TO:

[EXT. COFFEE CART - DAY - CONTINUOUS]

(JAKE and SARA sit at a table outside having a drink of coffee.)

JAKE: Oh, my god, that was horrible.

SARAH: I've never seen a human being that shade of green.

JAKE: All right, look. In my defense, it was the first time I'd ever tried tequila.

SARAH: You picked a hell of a place to do it. Lincoln fought a war to preserve the union, and you thanked him by puking on his shoes.

JAKE: Yeah, he never looked at me the same after that.

SARAH: (laughs) Oh, we were better with beer.

JAKE: Mmm. Grown up a little bit since then, huh?

SARAH: You did. You definitely have.

JAKE: You think?

SARAH: Yeah, you seem more confident. Especially lately. I don't know, I can't really put my finger on it, but you're just different.

JAKE: Well, I've been working out a little bit.

(SARAH keeps a straight face.)

SARAH: Can't tell.

JAKE: (laughs) Oh, man.

(She starts laughing.)

SARAH: Oh, come on, you set me up for that one.

JAKE: So you can tell.

SARAH: Um ... not really.

(SARAH reaches out and puts her hand over JAKE'S on the table.)

SARAH: I'm just kidding.

(JAKE laughs and tries not to glance down at their hands. Camera holds a beat on JAKE.)

CUT TO:

[EXT. STREET -- NIGHT]

(An SUV speeds down the road. The driver takes a sharp right, tires screeching. He presses on the gas.)

(The camera holds on the SUV as it drives away, then moves slowly to the dark sign. The lit lettering appears: BRIDGE CLOSED.)

(The SUV continues to follow the road. Coming directly toward him is a large hauling truck. The truck honks its horn and the SUV screeches to a halt.)

(Coming up rapidly behind them are two cars. The DRIVER puts the SUV in reverse and tries to get out of the trap. The two cars block his path out of the road. He brakes.)

(In the back seat, JOHN RAMSEY looks outside nervously.)

JOHN RAMSEY: What's happening?

(MEN dressed in black exit from both cars. The DRIVER puts on his headset and calls for help on the radio.)

DRIVER: (to radio) Base, come in. Base, we are under attack.

(The DRIVER watches as the MEN outside do something to the car.)

DRIVER: (to radio) Base, come in. They're jamming the signal.

JOHN RAMSEY: What do we do?

DRIVER: Nothing. The glass is completely bulletproof. The body is a zinc- alloy steel. They're not getting in here.

(JOHN RAMSEY takes a deep relieved breath and tries to calm down.)

(The SUV lurches, then they hear it. Sounds of fire against metal. They look down at the floorboards, then they look at each other.)

(JOHN RAMSEY wastes no more time. He opens his briefcase and turns his laptop on. It's a race against time. He quickly works on the laptop while the MEN outside work on getting into the car.)

JOHN RAMSEY: Come on. Come on. Come on.

(They're through. The car starts to fill with a white, cloudy gas. JOHN RAMSEY pauses and starts to cough.)

(The DRIVER turns and sees the gas inside the car.)

(Outside, the MEN with the guns wait patiently.)

(Both JOHN RAMSEY and the DRIVER cough continuously.)

(JOHN RAMSEY continues to work on the laptop. The laptop starts formatting the disk.)

DRIVER: (coughing) We got to get out of here.

JOHN RAMSEY: (coughin) Do not open that door.

DRIVER: I'm getting out.

(The DRIVER opens the door and gets out of the car.)

JOHN RAMSEY: No!

(As soon as the DRIVER steps out of the car, the MEN waiting outside fire. The DRIVER falls down to the ground, dead.)

(The CHINESE AGENT walks up to the SUV and opens the back door.)

CHINESE MAN: Give it to me.

(JOHN RAMSEY shakes his head.)

(It doesn't matter. They fire anyway.

FADE TO END OF TEASER ROLL TITLE CREDITS

INTRODUCTION: That's me. Jake Foley, I'm in Tech Support. Security Clearance: Low. Very low. Then one day, it all changed. Now, I can do things I've never dreamed of. I've been upgraded. I have these powers. Life just got real interesting.

(COMMERCIAL SET)

FADE IN.

[EXT. WASHINGTON (STOCK) - DAY]

[INT. NSA (STOCK) - DAY]

DIANE: (v.o.) Okay, go left on the next street.

[INT. NSA - RESEARCH LAB -- DAY]

(Camera cuts to monitors of an X-Box video game in progress. JAKE is a distance away from the control box controlling the game through his abilities. The game is a simple drive the car racing video game.)

(JAKE is having a blast.)

JAKE: Come on. Yeah, yeah. Here we go.

DIANE: Okay, Jake, you're pushing too hard, all right?

JAKE: No, no, no. I'm about to make the Eiffel Tower.

DIANE: No, no, no. I think that we need to take a break.

(But JAKE is intent on the game and getting really into it.)

JAKE: No, no, no, no. I'm almost to the Eiffel Tower.

DIANE: Jake, the purpose of this exercise is not winning the game, okay?

JAKE: Yeah, right.

(JAKE ups it a bit.)

(Quick Zoom to: The X-Box and inside through the wiring.)

(Cut back to: The video monitor. The car on the video game monitor has a sudden burst of speed.)

JAKE: Come on.

DIANE: No, okay, I'm going to turn it off.

(DIANE stands up and heads for the control box. JAKE puts a hand out and grabs her arm to stop her. He really wants to finish this game.)

JAKE: No, no, no, no. Hold on, hold on.

(DIANE moves forward. JAKE sees the Eiffel Tower and smiles.)

JAKE: There it is! Almost there. Come on.

(JAKE'S eyes light up with anticipation of winning the game.)

JAKE: There it is, there it is. Yeah, I won it!

(JAKE gives a cheer. The X-Box Controller explodes and short circuits.)

(DIANE screams in surprised. They both look down at the smoking X-Box. It's totally shot. DIANE turns to look at JAKE.)

JAKE: (sheepishly) Hhmm ... I beat the game.

(DIANE turns to look at the busted box, then back at JAKE.)

DIANE: Yeah, you broke the machine. Um, see, the purpose of the whole exercise is not to win the game, it's to learn how to control the nanites, and, you know, just for your info -- not controlling the nanites.

(DIANE gathers her notes and heads for the door. JAKE follows her out of the room.)

JAKE: I'll buy the NSA a new one.

DIANE: Oh, well ... somebody's in a good mood today.

(They leave the video room and head into the research lab area.)

JAKE: Yeah, I had a good weekend.

DIANE: Yeah, really?

JAKE: I had a date.

(DIANE heads over to the shelf. She turns around to look at JAKE at the mention of the word "date". JAKE quickly amends his assessment of the "date" as he settles in his seat.)

(DIANE reaches for a binder on the shelf.)

JAKE: Sort of. I don't know -- it kind of seemed like a date, I think.

DIANE: A sort of, kind of date. That, uh, sounds intriguing.

JAKE: Yeah.

DIANE: Uh, who's the girl?

JAKE: Sarah. We went to Georgetown together. She never really gave me the time of day, but yesterday at lunch ... I don't know. It kind of seemed like things might be changing, you know?

DIANE: (not thrilled) That's good. My advice to you -- don't push too hard.

(DIANE takes her things and leaves the room. JAKE turns to look at DIANE.)

CUT TO:

[INT. SIGNIT OPERATIONS -- DAY]

(Camera close up of the monitor with various crime scene photos of the attack on JOHN RAMSEY.)

LOU: It was a perfectly orchestrated attack.

KYLE: What were they after?

LOU: John Ramsey, senior engineer for GDLS. He was transporting preliminary schematics for a next generation composite tank.

(LOU motions to the tech and the monitor changes to show the schematics of the tank on screen.)

LOU: Plastic and glass fiber. It's as strong as what we've got, but 70 percent lighter. They can be flown in just about anywhere.

KYLE: So who are we looking for?

LOU: There's been increased chatter on echelon indicating possible Chinese involvement. How long since you've had contact with Mei Ling?

(KYLE glances at LOU. He doesn't like where this is going, but doesn't withhold the information.)

KYLE: Two and a half years.

(LOU nods and leaves the order unsaid. KYLE turns to look at her.)

KYLE: I can't help you.

(KYLE walks away. LOU follows him.)

LOU: Kyle, she is our most senior double agent in Chinese intelligence.

(KYLE walks to the back of the room and stops in front of the table to get the files.)

LOU: If there's anyone who could confirm their involvement, let alone help us get this thing back, it would be her.

KYLE: There must be someone else who's been handling her.

LOU: No one she's been nearly as forthcoming with.

(The insinuation is there. KYLE doesn't say anything and once again turns to head out the room. LOU follows him.)

(KYLE heads up the stairs. LOU keeps up with him.)

LOU: The schematics are on an encrypted laptop. They have to be physically removed from the country in order for their techs to decode it. It could be smuggled by diplomatic pouch at any moment, Kyle.

(KYLE finally stops and turns around to LOU.)

KYLE: Are you ordering me to do this?

(LOU doesn't say anything, but the order is clear. KYLE sighs. He turns and walks away from her. LOU follows him.)

LOU: Once you've determined the meeting place, we'll get a team in there and monitor ...

KYLE: No. No. You want me to talk to her, I talk to her alone.

LOU: No, Kyle, it's protocol. It's for your safety as well as hers.

KYLE: This woman reads a room better than anyone I know. She can sniff out any agent.

LOU: Not necessarily.

CUT TO:

[INT. MUSEUM -- DAY]

(JAKE steps toward the center of the gallery display. He glances over and sees a WOMAN looking at a picture. He walks over to her and stands next to her.)

JAKE: (he laughs) They call this art?

(The WOMAN rolls her eyes at JAKE, then walks away from him leaving him standing in front of the painting.)

(JAKE glances over to the side and sees KYLE sitting on one of the center seats, an open program in his hand.)

(JAKE steps out of camera frame.)

(MEI LING WONG walks into the room. She casually sits down on the other side of the same cushion that KYLE is sitting on. Their backs are to each other.)

MEI LING WONG: {speaks untranslated Chinese}

KYLE: (sighs) {speaks untranslated Chinese}

MEI LING WONG: You must be in trouble.

KYLE: And why do you say that?

MEI LING WONG: You called.

KYLE: I'm sure you know the Chinese have stolen something very important to us. We want it back.

MEI LING WONG: A statement was issued. We've formally denied ...

KYLE: That means nothing.

MEI LING WONG: It's all I know.

KYLE: So, tell me ... when did you become such a patriot?

MEI LING WONG: Two and a half years ago. I'll give you the exact date if you don't remember.

(Standing off to the side, JAKE listens in on their exchange.)

KYLE: I remember. I'm prepared to offer you full asylum. Five years expenses.

MEI LING WONG: Why should I trust you?

KYLE: Because this is work, Mei Ling. I've never failed you there.

MEI LING WONG: Full asylum, and two million dollars.

KYLE: That's a lot of money.

MEI LING WONG: You have a lot to make up for.

KYLE: I need to get authorization.

MEI LING WONG: I'd suggest you work quickly. The schematics are being held in the archives within the secure corridor at the embassy. It's scheduled to be taken out tonight by diplomatic pouch.

KYLE: How do we get it?

MEI LING WONG: There's a reception beginning at 8:00 pm. You'll be my guest.

(Their conversation over, MEILING WONG stands up. KYLE reaches behind him and grabs her hand to hold her there. He stands up, still holding her hand. They turn to face each other.)

(Off to the side, JAKE watches them.)

KYLE: You haven't changed.

(KYLE drops her hand. MEI LING looks KYLE over.)

MEI LING WONG: Neither have you.

(She turns and leaves the room.)

CUT TO:

[EXT. SIDEWALK -- DAY]

(KYLE is walking swiftly down the sidewalk. JAKE is trotting along side trying to keep up with him.)

JAKE: So, you and Mei Ling kind of have this casablanca thing going on. Which is none of my business.

(KYLE doesn't say anything. He keeps walking.)

JAKE: It's just ... I can sort of relate. See, I'm having this situation with someone from my past ... (KYLE glances at JAKE.) ... right, you don't care. So I guess you're going to that party tonight.

CUT TO:

[INT. NSA - LOU BECKETT'S OFFICE -- DAY]

(The door opens and LOU walks into her office. KYLE and JAKE follow close behind. She walks over to her desk.)

LOU: Absolutely not.

KYLE: Lou, those were her terms.

(JAKE turns around and closes the door.)

LOU: Kyle, you're no longer a field agent. Your cover was blown. Anything you do out there's a risk.

KYLE: Well, you had no problem sending me out there this morning.

LOU: D.C. is not the field. That embassy is sovereign territory. You get caught inside, you're on your own. There's nothing we can do.

KYLE: Once those schematics leave the country ... then there's nothing we can do.

LOU: We have other agents who can perform this operation, ones who wouldn't be as valuable to the Chinese if they got caught.

JAKE: (interrupts) I don't think that's possible. Uh ...

(JAKE steps forward to explain.)

JAKE: I heard everything that they said, and she only wants Kyle. (pauses awkwardly) To-to do this.

(LOU sighs.)

LOU: Do you trust her?

(KYLE glances at JAKE.)

KYLE: I trust her enough.

(LOU nods. KYLE smiles and turns to JAKE.)

CUT TO:

[INT. NSA - CORRIDOR -- DAY]

(The doors open. JAKE and DIANE walk through the doors and through the corridor.)

DIANE: Well, this is all kind of sudden, don't you think? I mean, the nanites are really sensitive, and it's not like you mastered control, you know, that's fine in the video game, but this, this is the Chinese embassy, okay? They have guns and guards and, and foreign languages. I mean, anything could go wrong. Jake, have you really thought about this?

(JAKE stops in front of the doors to the central operations room and turns to look at DIANE.)

JAKE: Diane, this is my first mission. I'm nervous enough, you're really not helping.

DIANE: Yeah, sorry.

(He turns and walks into the room.)

[SIGNIT OPERATIONS]

(They meet up with KYLE who fills them in.)

KYLE: Mei Ling Wong has arranged an invitation for me under the name Felix Garay, Venezuelan Oil Executive.

(KYLE turns and leads them toward LOU who is standing behind the first row of techs and monitors facing the main monitor.)

KYLE: At 10:00 pm in the main ballroom, she'll give me a security card.

(On the main monitor, a schematic of the Chinese Embassy appears on screen that shows the area that KYLE is talking about.)

KYLE: It'll allow me access to the main secure corridor. Now, it's t this point, we have to get Mei Ling out. If they trace that card to her, she's dead.

LOU: How do we get her out?

KYLE: Catering truck. Agent De Grasso will be the driver.

(KYLE turns to look at AGENT DE GRASSO who acknowledges that he's listening to them.)

KYLE: (continues) The secure corridor is located in the basement of the embassy. Once I'm down there, I'll be out of range for thermal imaging. Getting there from the main ballroom, I'll encounter security cameras here, here ... and here.

(KYLE points to the areas on the main monitor.)

KYLE: Security guards change shifts at 10:30. That's where Jake comes in. (JAKE smiles at the mention of his part in the operation.) Diane?

(DIANE is looking to the side, lost in her thoughts. KYLE calls to her again.)

KYLE: Diane?

(She snaps out of it and gives her report.)

DIANE: Yes. Jake, Jake will interface with the security recording devices, and, uh, rewind them thirty minutes, temporarily disabling them in the process, so when Kyle's on the move, the hallways will appear empty.

KYLE: The main security office is located here, just off the main ballroom. How close does he have to be?

DIANE: Uh, well, based on our tests, I'd say no more than, uh, 30 ... 30 feet.

JAKE: (smiling, getting excited) Great, great. So what's my cover? Uh, I speak a little Spanish, so maybe I can be another oil executive. Wait. But ... oh no, 'cause we, we can't be together uh... royalty?

(LOU clears her throat and glances at KYLE.)

JAKE: Too obvious? Okay ... billionaire software mogul ...

LOU: (interrupts) Jake ... we create the cover.

JAKE: Oh, right. Right, sorry, of course. (clears throat) So, uh, what do you have in mind?

CUT TO:

[CLOSE UP]

(JAKE adjusts the cuffs to his pristine, white dress shirt.)

(Cut to: He buttons up the front of his shirt.)

(Cut to: He adjusts his black bow tie.)

(Cut to: He adjusts the collar to his white tux.)

CUT TO:

[INT. CHINESE EMBASSY -- NIGHT]

(JAKE walks across the room, his hands in his pockets. He's dressed in a white tux, white shirt and black bow tie.)

(He smiles as he reaches the third floor balcony overlooking the main lobby. He leans his elbows on the railing and looks down at the party below.)

(Someone clears their throat and taps JAKE on the shoulder. JAKE turns around to find the HEAD CATERER there carrying a tray of Hors d'oeuvres. He holds the tray out to JAKE.)

BOSS: Hors d'oeuvres? They don't serve themselves.

(JAKE takes the tray, smiles at the HEAD CATERER and walks away toward the party.)

FADE OUT.

(COMMERCIAL SET)

FADE IN.

[INT. NSA - SIGNIT OPERATIONS -- NIGHT]

(On the wall monitor, a schematic of the Chinese Embassy appears and adjusts to show a top view of the floor plans. AGENT HART reviews the schematic with LOU and DIANE.)

HART: We've added markers to our agent's heat signatures. This way our satellites can distinguish them from the other guests at the party.

(Close up of two particular dots on the schematic that pulsates on the monitor.)

HART: That's Kyle and Jake in the ballroom, and De Grasso by the van.

(A third dot in a separate part of the map pulsates. DIANE takes out her palm pilot to look at JAKE'S vitals.)

DIANE: Oh, no ... I got data streaming in from his nanites.

(LOU reaches for the palm pilot and looks at it.)

LOU: What the problem?

DIANE: He's really nervous.

CUT TO:

[INT. CHINESE EMBASSY - MAIN HALL -- NIGHT -- CONTINUOUS]

(JAKE is walking down the stairs carrying a serving tray with filled champagne glasses with one hand while holding onto the railing with the other. He reaches the lower level and starts to maneuver his way through the dancing guests, more intent on not spilling the glasses than serving them.)

(A woman walking by adds a red napkin to his tray. He puts out a hand to steady himself.)

JAKE: Thank you.

(A man walking by bumps into his shoulder.)

(KYLE appears and holds onto the tray while JAKE steadies himself.)

JAKE: Oh, uh ... thank you.

KYLE: Don't mention it.

(KYLE takes a glass off of the try and moves along. The HEAD WAITER taps JAKE on the shoulder. He turns around to look at him.)

BOSS: Stop and go. Stop and ... (motioning with his hands) ... go ...

(JAKE sighs and walks away. The HEAD WAITER moves on. KYLE stands on the side, looking around.)

(JAKE glances behind him at KYLE and their eyes meet. KYLE nods and JAKE moves along.)

(KYLE steps forward toward the center of the room, turns and looks up to see MEI LING WONG dressed in red with her back against the balcony rail. She turns and looks around. She sees KYLE and their eyes meet.)

(She smiles at him and heads for the stairs. KYLE watches her as she descends the stair case, their eyes never leaving each other.)

(Meanwhile, JAKE continues to walk through the guests carrying the tray which now has only two glasses on it and more rubbish. A woman walking by tries to drop a napkin on the try only to have it fall on the floor.)

(JAKE kneels down to pick up the napkin. He puts it on the tray. Another woman walking by puts her empty drinking glass on his tray.)

JAKE: Thank you.

(JAKE walks over to one of the tables, puts his tray down and starts to clear the table up of the abandoned plates. Behind him, we see SARAH staring at his back.)

SARAH: Jake!

(JAKE looks up, alarmed. Making a quick decision, he picks up one of the champagne glasses from his tray and turns around to talk with SARAH.)

[SARAH'S POV]

(JAKE turns around, recognizes her, lifts up his glass and walks over toward her.)

JAKE: Sarah. Hey ...

[RESUME POV]

SARAH: Okay, this freaking me out. I keep running into you everywhere.

JAKE: Yeah, that's ... that's crazy.

SARAH: Must be fate.

(They clink their glasses together before they sip.)

SARAH: So what are you doing here?

JAKE: Um ... you know, just another invite. Heard they had good food.

(SARAH leans forward and grabs JAKE'S arm.)

SARAH: Oh, the wild mushroom tart is fabulous, you have to try one.

(She leads JAKE back toward the buffet tables.)

JAKE: Oh, you know, I've had a whole tray.

(They laugh. SARAH looks at JAKE in his white waiter outfit. She smiles.)

SARAH: Jake. You look great.

JAKE: Ah, it's a rental.

SARAH: Well, you certainly fill it out well.

JAKE: (pleased) I told, I told you I was working out.

(SARAH rolls her eyes, smiles, then turns and heads once more toward the food tables.)

CUT TO:

[INT. NSA - SIGNIT OPERATIONS -- NIGHT -- CONTINUOUS]

(DIANE looks at her palm pilot and is alarmed by what she sees. She shows it to LOU.)

DIANE: Look, uh, look... I don't know who, who he's talking to, but, his, his blood pressure is rising and his heart rate is increasing.

(LOU glances at the palm pilot, then moves away. DIANE follows her.)

DIANE: His adrenals are activated. Lou ... Lou, is there any way maybe that we can pull him out of this, because, I, I don't know, I, I think this is not good.

LOU: (interrupts) Diane. The mission hasn't even started yet.

DIANE: Okay, yeah.

(DIANE turns and walks away.)

CUT TO:

[INT. CHINESE EMBASSY - MAIN HALL -- NIGHT -- CONTINUOUS]

(SARAH glances at JAKE who is standing next to her in the middle of the room.)

SARAH: Are you nervous?

JAKE: What? Ah, no. No, no, no, I'm having a great time, this is, you know I missed this last year, and it's, this is good.

SARAH: You think?

JAKE: You're not having fun?

SARAH: Fun? You know why I'm here, Jake?

(SARAH pulls JAKE aside to talk confidentially with him.)

SARAH: Congressman Williams. The Agriculture Committee? My fun involves lingering around the background, waiting for the right moment to make small talk, in the hopes he comes aboard for the Farm Bill. (sighs) Truth be told, I'd rather be anywhere else.

JAKE: (surprised) Really?

SARAH: Yeah. (They look at each other.) I'm sorry ... talking your ear off. One glass of veuve clicquot too many.

(JAKE glances up and finds that SARAH is leading him in the same direction where the HEAD WAITER is. JAKE pulls SARA aside to walk in a different direction.)

JAKE: Uh ...

SARAH: What are you doing?

JAKE: Uh, nothing. Nothing, it's just so crowded over there. Hot, you know, uh, you, you want to go dance? Let's dance.

(JAKE grabs SARAH'S hand and pulls her toward the dance floor.)

CUT TO:

[INT. CHINESE EMBASSY - DANCE FLOOR -- NIGHT -- CONTINUOUS]

(KYLE and MEI LING are on the dance floor dancing. Their moves are close and very intimate as they gaze into each other's eyes.)

MEI LING WONG: How have you been?

KYLE: Well, I haven't danced in a while.

MEI LING WONG: I couldn't tell.

KYLE: Now you're just flattering me.

MEI LING WONG: Is it that obvious?

KYLE: About as subtle as that dress you're wearing.

MEI LING WONG: Does it look familiar?

KYLE: Hong Kong.

MEI LING WONG: Impressive. And I wasn't even wearing it for very long.

(Camera moves fast forward around the dance floor and finds SARAH and JAKE dancing on the other side. SARAH is watching KYLE and MEI LING dance.)

SARAH: Look at those two. I mean, get a room.

(JAKE turns and sees KYLE move his hand slowly down the front of MEI LING'S chest and linger at her cleavage, his finger curling into the dress's bodice.)

JAKE: Maybe they're just caught up in the moment.

(SARAH turns and looks a little surprised at JAKE - at his response.)

SARAH: Yeah ... that happens.

(KYLE reaches into MEI LING'S dress and pulls out the access key card. He holds it in his hand. MEI LING immediately pulls his hand back toward her. Their eyes are locked onto each other.)

MEI LING WONG: Right now, if you had to choose, me or the mission ...

(KYLE doesn't answer her. Their gazes continue to burn into the other. He moves his hand down and tucks the key card into his pants pocket. MEI LING puts her arm around KYLE'S shoulders as they dance.)

KYLE: At the bar, directly behind me, is a waiter.

(MEI LING looks and sees AGENT DE GRASSO dressed as a waiter standing next to the bar.)

KYLE: He's an agent. He'll escort you to the catering truck and get you out of here. Mei Ling, you have to go. Now.

(They quietly dance a little longer. MEI LING reluctantly pulls away and steps back from KYLE. She turns and heads for DE GRASSO. KYLE watches her go.)

(Cut to: JAKE and SARAH are on the dance floor. As he turns them, JACK glances over at the door and sees CONGRESSMAN WILLIAMS walk into the room with his date.)

JAKE: Oh, incoming. There's your mark.

(SARAH looks up, sees the CONGRESSMAN, and suddenly turns JAKE, pulling him to the side and around so the CONGRESSMAN can't see her.)

JAKE: Oh, whoa! Why'd you do that?

SARAH: Do you know what? It's, it's nothing that can't wait. Just for ... just for right now, I want to forget about work and have some fun.

JAKE: Okay. What'd you have in mind?

SARAH: I want to feel like we did in college. You know, I want to ... get a six pack and go to the Lincoln Memorial, and not worry about anything at all. What do you think?

JAKE: (hesitates) Uh ... (considers) ... I think that sounds ... (decides) ... perfect.

SARAH: (smiles) Okay. Come on, let's do it.

(SARAH grabs his hands in her hers and heads for the door. They get a couple of steps away when JAKE pulls back.)

JAKE: Uh ... I, I can't.

SARAH: Why?

(Before he can answer her, they're interrupted.)

KYLE: (o.s.) Excuse me.

(They turn and find KYLE standing next to them holding an empty glass in his hand. He gives the glass to JAKE.)

KYLE: I need a refill.

(JAKE takes the glass. KYLE looks meaningfully at JAKE. SARAH looks around the room and notices that JAKE'S wearing the same outfit as the other waiters at the party.)

SARAH: You're, you're a waiter.

KYLE: Yes, he is. And let's make it a double this time.

(KYLE turns and leaves. JAKE turns back to SARAH. He doesn't know what to say. Instead, he turns and leaves SARAH to get that drink.)

(JAKE joins KYLE at the bar. He hands the empty glass to the bartender.)

JAKE: (to the bartender) Can I get a rye on the rocks? Make it a double.

(They stand quietly next to each other without looking at each other.)

JAKE: (to KYLE) Was that really necessary?

KYLE: Yes, it was. Jake, you can't afford to get distracted. You have a job to do.

JAKE: Well, I wasn't the only one who was being distracted. You still have feelings for her?

KYLE: That's irrelevant.

JAKE: Is it?

(KYLE looks down at his watch.)

KYLE: You know what -- it's time. (sighs) Let's just finish this.

(KYLE walks away from the bar.)

(After a moment, JAKE follows. He walks into the center of the dance floor and positions himself. He takes a breath and looks up at the security camera.)

CUT TO:

[INT. CHINESE EMBASSY - SECURITY -- NIGHT -- CONTINUOUS]

(Camera pulls back from the monitor on the dance floor that shows JAKE standing alone and looking up directly at it. The SECURITY GUARD sits at the console watching the monitors.)

(The door to the room opens and another GUARD walks in carrying a plate full of food for the other guard who turns away from the monitor to smile in appreciation at his friend.)

CUT TO:

[INT. NSA - SIGNIT OPERATIONS -- NIGHT -- CONTINUOUS]

(The clock reads: 10:28:24. DIANE and LOU watch the monitors.)

DIANE: (sighs) Jake's in place.

(They both watch the colored dots on the screen.)

LOU: Kyle's on his way.

CUT TO:

[INT. CHINESE EMBASSY - MAIN HALL -- NIGHT -- CONTINUOUS]

(KYLE stands by the bar. He glances up at the security camera and notices the red blinking light. He turns around to look at JAKE.)

(On the dance floor, JAKE prepares to do his part of the mission. SARAH walks up to him.)

SARAH: Jake ...

(JAKE turns around.)

SARAH: What are you doing?

JAKE: I'm, uh ... I'm not exactly sure how to explain what I'm doing.

SARAH: You're moonlighting. You're making a little extra money on the side. Jake, you don't have to pretend with me.

JAKE: Sarah ... I'm an undercover agent. I'm here on a huge mission.

(She stares at JAKE, then she starts to laugh. JAKE laughs nervously with her.)

SARAH: (laughs) That's hilarious, Jake. Okay, when are you getting off?

JAKE: Uh ... l-l-less than an hour.

SARAH: Right. Lincoln Memorial. I'll get the beer.

JAKE: Okay.

(SARAH turns and leaves. JAKE closes his eyes tightly.)

CUT TO:

[INT. NSA - SIGNIT OPERATIONS -- NIGHT -- CONTINUOUS]

(The clock reads: 10:29:21.)

(LOU turns nervously away from the small monitor to the larger monitor.)

CUT TO:

[INT. CHINESE EMBASSY -- NIGHT -- CONTINUOUS]

(Still standing over at the bar, KYLE glances at his watch and waits.

(Cut to: JAKE looks at his watch. It's almost time. THUR '03 / 9-25 / 10:29:56.)

(JAKE prepares himself. He takes a breath, then looks up directly at the security cameras.)

(Camera zooms upward, pulling away from JAKE, turns and heads directly into the security camera.)

(Quick CGI POV of the inside of the security camera.)

(Camera pulls back to show JAKE on the monitor standing in the middle of the dance floor. In the background, we can hear voices speaking in Chinese.)

(Camera pulls away slowly. JAKE is on the dance floor. The camera fizzes, skips, then JAKE is gone.)

(Camera pulls back to show the two Chinese SECURITY GUARDS picking at the plate of food. Both of them aren't paying attention to the monitors.)

CUT TO:

[INT. CHINESE EMBASSY -- NIGHT -- CONTINUOUS]

(KYLE looks up at the security camera and sees that the red blinking light is gone. JAKE did it. KYLE sets his watch.

TIMER
10:30
0:30:00

(Thirty minutes and counting.)

(Cut to: JAKE glances down from the security camera and smiles quietly to himself.)

(Cut to: KYLE stands near exit #3. He casually walks through the door.)

(Cut to: JAKE smiles. The HEAD WAITER walks up to JAKE from behind. He's carrying a tray of drinking glasses.)

BOSS: What are you doing?

(JAKE turns around and picks up a glass off of the tray.)

JAKE: (smiles) I'm quitting.

(He takes a sip, winks at the HEAD WAITER and leaves. The HEAD WAITER watches him walk away with a shocked look on his face.)

CUT TO:

[INT. CHINESE EMBASSY - NIGHT -- CONTINUOUS]

(Meanwhile, KYLE exits out of door #6. He looks down the basement corridor and sees that it's clear.)

(The security camera is still down. He finds the security lock and heads for it. He takes out the access key card and swipes it through the lock. The lights on the lock turn green. It's open.)

(KYLE glances around. He opens the door and walks through it. The door shuts behind him.)

CUT TO:

[INT. NSA - SIGNIT OPERATIONS - NIGHT -- CONTINUOUS]

(On the monitor, they watch as KYLE'S dot goes through the door and disappears from view.)

LOU: He's in.

(LOU turns to DIANE who worriedly nods her head as she fiddles with her necklace. She sighs and rubs her forehead with the back of her index finger.)

CUT TO:

[INT. CHINESE EMBASSY -- NIGHT -- CONTINUOUS]

(KYLE walks through the empty corridor toward the door at the end of the hall. He reaches the door and glances around him. He glances at his watch:

TIMER
10:33
0:27:00

(He slides the door open and walks inside. He turns the corner and walks deeper into the hidden basement.)

CUT TO:

[EXT. CHINESE EMBASSY -- NIGHT -- CONTINUOUS]

(JAKE walks out of the building. He casually walks down the stairs, nodding at the people he passes by. He walks down the sidewalk and slows as he sees something he's not supposed to. The catering truck is still parked in the lot. Oh, this is not good.)

(JAKE glances around him, then heads for the truck.)

CUT TO:

[INT. NSA - SIGNIT OPERATIONS -- NIGHT -- CONTINUOUS]

(An AGENT walks past LOU.)

AGENT: Telephone. Agent Wallace.

(LOU gets up and heads for the technician/agent who holds out the phone for her. She answers it.)

LOU: (to phone) Lou Beckett. What do you mean, she never made it to the safe house?

(Standing behind her, we see DIANE turn around to look at LOU.)

LOU: (to phone) Where's the driver?

CUT TO:

[EXT. CHINESE EMBASSY - CATERING TRUCK (BACK) -- NIGHT -- CONTINUOUS]

(JAKE slides the back door open. Inside he finds AGENT DE GRASSO dead, his body slumped on the floor, head propped up against the box he fell on.)

JAKE: (under his breath) Oh, no.

CUT TO:

[INT. CHINESE EMBASSY - BASEMENT -- NIGHT -- CONTINUOUS]

(KYLE grabs the briefcase and opens it. He looks inside to see that it is the computer he's looking for. He smiles in satisfaction when he sees that it is. He closes the briefcase, turns and heads back to the door to leave.)

(When he rounds the corner, he finds MEI LING standing there with a couple of Chinese AGENTS behind her.)

(KYLE freezes in his tracks, surprise written all over his face.)

(They look at each other. The AGENTS move forward toward KYLE.)

MEI LING WONG: Good job. Unfortunately, you made the wrong choice.

(KYE sighs. MEI LING glances back at the other AGENT standing behind her. He steps forward and walks toward KYLE.)

(Finding himself trapped between the two men, KYLE moves and fights. He kicks the man in front of him and pushes him toward the wall. He gets in a good punch to the face, then swings around to face the other AGENT behind him. The first AGENT falls to the floor.)

(When KYLE swings around, the second AGENT hits the butt of his gun in KYLE'S face sending him to the floor unconscious.)

(Through it all, MEI LING impassionedly watches.)

FADE OUT.

(COMMERCIAL SET)

FADE IN.

[INT. CHINESE EMBASSY - BASEMENT -- NIGHT]

(When KYLE comes to, he finds himself tied to a chair, shirt sleeves rolled up to his elbows and being injected with something in his arm by one of the CHINESE AGENTS. MEI LING stands next to the chair watching.)

(KYLE breaths heavily he's being injected.)

MEI LING WONG: (to agent with hypo) (in Chinese)

(He glances at her, nods, then leaves the room. Both AGENTS leave the room. MEI LING glances down at KYLE as she waits for the drug to take effect.)

MEI LING WONG: It will help you be more honest. I know how difficult that could be for you.

KYLE: You could've gotten out. You could've been free from this life.

MEI LING WONG: I am out. Delivering you is my final mission.

KYLE: Don't do this, Mei Ling.

(She walks around to the back of his chair and rests both hands on the sides of his arm rests.)

MEI LING WONG: It didn't have to be like this. Two and a half years ago, we could've made a life together.

KYLE: (breathing heavily) Two and a half years ago ... you would've been dead.

(Camera holds on MEI LING'S surprised look.)

CUT TO:

[INT. NSA - SIGNIT OPERATIONS -- NIGHT -- CONTINUOUS]

(Back at headquarters, LOU is on the phone.)

LOU: (to phone) We have a situation at the Chinese embassy. Yes. I understand.

(LOU hangs up and walks past DIANE. DIANE follows her.)

DIANE: Jake is still on the grounds. What's happening?

LOU: Mei Ling never made it to the safe house. I can't reach Agent De Grasso. (glances at her watch) Kyle was supposed to check in ten minutes ago. His intel on our mainland agents is far more valuable to the Chinese than the schematics.

DIANE: He's an experienced agent. I mean, he would never ... say anything.

LOU: When they're through with him, he won't have a choice.

(An AGENT sitting at one of the workstations holds up a phone.)

AGENT: Ms. Beckett.

(LOU puts on her headset to answer the line.)

INTERCUT WITH:

[EXT. CHINESE EMBASSY - CATERING TRUCK (BACK) -- NIGHT -- CONTINUOUS]

JAKE: (to the cell) Agent De Grasso's dead.

LOU: (to headset) Jake, you listen to me. You need to get out of there now.

(Behind her, DIANE nods as she listens in on the one side of the conversation.)

JAKE: I can't. There's guards everywhere.

(JAKE glances outside and sees nothing but guards standing at their posts outside.)

LOU: Your cover hasn't been compromised. Just act casual. Walk through the front gate. We'll have a team waiting there for you.

JAKE: (sighs) Where's Kyle?

LOU: We haven't heard from him yet.

JAKE: I can't just leave him here.

LOU: Jake, Kyle's an experienced agent. If he has any problems, he can handle it.

JAKE: Okay. Okay.

(JAKE slowly gets up from his position next to AGENT DE GRASSO.)

LOU: Now, you just stay on the phone. You're just talking to a friend.

(JAKE gets out of the back of the catering truck and closes the door behind him.)

CUT TO:

[INT. CHINESE EMBASSY - BASEMENT -- NIGHT -- CONTINUOUS]

(MEI LING stands in front of KYLE. She turns to look directly at him.)

MEI LING WONG: I don't believe you.

KYLE: We intercepted a message. Chinese intelligence suspected you were working with us. They had snipers waiting outside the Hotel in Seville. If I had shown up there ... if I'd even shown up in the city ... they would've killed you. I did what I did ... to save your life.

MEI LING WONG: You're lying.

KYLE: Mei Ling, listen to me. Why do you think I'm here? Why do you think I'm doing this? To get you out once and for all ... so that we can be together.

(His words are having a powerful affect on MEI LING.)

KYLE: I love you.

(MEI LING turns away and sniffles. She tries to regain control over her emotions. She looks back at KYLE.)

MEI LING WONG: It's too late.

(MEI LING looks up at someone behind KYLE, off screen.)

MEI LING WONG: (in Chinese)

(She walks away and heads for the door. Standing in the doorway is the AGENT she was talking to . Halfway to the door, MEI LING turns around and looks at KYLE. After a beat, she walks away and out the doorway. The AGENT walks into the room.)

(He puts a case down on the table nearby, unzips and opens it. Inside are various torturing devices. He looks down at the case, then back up at KYLE.)

CUT TO:

[INT. NSA - SIGNIT OPERATIONS -- NIGHT -- CONTINUOUS]

(LOU monitors JAKE's movement on the monitor as she talks with him on the headset.)

LOU: (to comm.) You're almost there.

INTERCUT WITH:

[EXT. CHINESE EMBASSY - SIDEWALK -- NIGHT -- CONTINUOUS]

(JAKE walks along the sidewalk heading for the gates as he speaks on the phone.)

JAKE: (to the phone) (forced casual) Yes ... she didn't want the glass. She wanted the whole bottle. Yeah.

(Cut to: The JAKE-dot on the monitor moves around the embassy on screen.)

(Cut back to: The real JAKE stops walking.)

(Cut to: The JAKE-dot on the monitor stops moving. LOU watches the monitor and listens on the headset. DIANE glances down at her palm pilot.)

(Cut to: JAKE listens.)

JAKE: (to phone) Wait a minute.

(JAKE turns slowly and looks at the partially exposed Embassy basement window and the light behind it.)

VOICES: We're not getting anything out of him.

JAKE: (to phone) I hear him.

LOU: (to comm.) What?

JAKE: (to phone) I hear him. It's Kyle. He ... he's in the basement.

LOU: (to comm.) It was a setup.

JAKE: What?

LOU: (to comm.) They wanted Kyle all along. This whole thing was a setup. Jake, you need to get out of there right now.

(JAKE looks in front of him and sees the gate leading out of the Chinese Embassy. He stares at them and starts backing up, walking back toward the building.)

JAKE: (to phone) Uh ... hello?

(LOU watches as the JAKE-dot on the monitor moves toward the Embassy entrance.)

LOU: (to comm.) Where are you going? Jake, you-you-you're not heading towards the gate.

(JAKE continues to head back toward the embassy.)

JAKE: (to phone) I'm, uh, I'm losing you.

(JAKE shuts off his phone and pockets it.0

LOU: (to comm.) Jake.

(JAKE hurries up the Embassy stairs.)

(Cut to: The JAKE-dot enters the building. LOU turns to look at DIANE who has her eyes glued to the monitor and is looking very distressed.)

CUT TO:

[INT. CHINESE EMBASSY - MAIN HALL - NIGHT -- CONTINUOUS]

(Once inside the main hall, JAKE heads for the stairway door, #3. With his back to the door, JAKE looks around the room, then casually slips inside when no one's looking.)

(The door shuts behind him.)

CUT TO:

[INT. CHINESE EMBASSY - BASEMENT -- NIGHT -- CONTINUOUS]

(The INTERROGATOR leans in close to KYLE who is completely drugged out of it. He reaches out a lightly adjusts KYLE'S loosened tie.)

INTERROGATOR: All you have to do ... is give me names.

(KYLE looks up at him, takes a couple of deep heaving breaths and spits on him. The INTERROGATOR takes out a white handkerchief and calmly wipes the spit from his face.)

INTERROGATOR: I see.

(The INTERROGATOR walks back to his case, takes out an electric prod, turns it on to test it, then heads back to KYLE. He casually swings it around as he walks back.)

CUT TO:

[INT. CHINESE EMBASSY -- NIGHT -- CONTINUOUS]

(JAKE exits the stairwell and reaches the basement. He approaches the security lock and unlocks it.)

[CUE SOUND: JAKE'S ABILITIES]

(The red lights on the lock turn green. JAKE opens door #8 and walks inside. The door closes behind him.)

CUT TO:

[INT. NSA - SIGNIT OPERATIONS -- NIGHT -- CONTINUOUS]

(DIANE monitors JAKE'S vitals. She looks up at the wall monitor where the JAKE- dot has disappeared down into the same basement corridor that the KYLE-dot disappeared into. She turns back to her palm pilot.)

DIANE: Oh, my god.

(DIENA glances up and heads over to LOU.)

DIANE: (to LOU) He's gone. (indicates her palm pilot) Look at this, he's gone.

CUT TO:

[INT. CHINESE EMBASSY - BASEMENT -- NIGHT -- CONTINUOUS]

(The INTERROGATOR gently caresses KYLE'S face with the tip of the electric prod.)

INTERROGATOR: Seventy-five thousand volts of electricity. Are you sure?

(KYLE takes a couple of deep breaths, lifts his eyes to the INTERROGATOR and he doesn't back down.)

KYLE: You go ahead.

(KYLE yells as the prod touches him sending the electricity through him.)

(Cut to: Just outside the door, JAKE hears KYLE yell. He glances around the door and sees KYLE bound to a chair in the center of the room, the INTERROGATOR leaning over him. JAKE pulls back.)

INTERROGATOR: Enough?

KYLE: You go to hell.

INTERROGATOR: Don't worry, I have all night

(The INTERROGATOR heads back to his case to get another torturous device. JAKE peers around the door to see the man pick up something form the case. He glances down at it, then back at KYLE.)

(Seeing his opportunity, JAKE runs into the room toward the INTERROGATOR.)

JAKE: Hey!

(JAKE reaches out a hand and grabs the INTERROGATOR by the arm, turning him around. He pulls back his fist and punches the INTERROGATOR, intending to hit him in the face. The INTERROGATOR steps aside and JAKE hits the cabinet on the wall instead.)

(The INTERROGATOR, an exceptional fighter, swings and hits JAKE in the face. JAKE turns upon impact. The INTERROGATOR steps forward and kicks JAKE in the face, he follows it up by kicking JAKE again, this time in the stomach, pushing him back out the door.)

(JAKE steps out into the next portion of the room, the INTERROGATOR jumps down in front of JAKE. JAKE looks up and sees his opponent swing around and kick him in the face. Before he can even get up, he gets kicked again in the face. JAKE'S back hits the wall.)

(JAKE pushes himself away from the wall only to get kicked in the stomach and again in the face. JAKE'S taking a beating. Over and over, his opponent hits JAKE.)

(Finally, JAKE hits the wall and slumps down. Finding that JAKE'S not much of a challenge, the INTERROGATOR stops and stares at JAKE, waiting for him. JAKE blinks, clearing his vision. A trickle of blood spills from his nose. He stares at the INTERROGATOR.)

[CUE SOUND: ENHANCED ABILITIES]

(Quick CGI: Camera zooms in through JAKE'S eyes, through his blood vessels and to the nanites as they send electrical impulses through his system. End of quick CGI. Resume to JAKE.)

(The INTERROGATOR doesn't wait long. He swings back to finish JAKE off. He kicks.)

(Renewed, JAKE catches the INTERROGATOR'S leg mid-air and pushes the man backward. The man flies back all the way across the room and hits the wall behind him. The MAN looks up at JAKE. He's unmoving as if the impact to the wall was too much; his eyes staring at JAKE.)

(JAKE pulls back his fist, but notices that his opponent's slumping. He watches as he falls to his knees to the floor, then face down to the ground with a thud.)

(JAKE stares at the man's bloody back, then up to the wall, where part of the building internal structure exposed, the iron rods protruding through the broken cement wall, the man's blood fresh on them.)

(JAKE stares at the wall for a moment, then checks his watch:

TIMER
10:59
0:00:02

TIMER
10:59
0:00:01

(JAKE looks up at the security camera. The red light starts blinking again.)

[SECURITY ROOM]

[ON MONITORS]

(The monitors from the basement show the empty room. As the security system re- enables, the screen flickers and the dead INTERROGATOR face down on the floor with JAKE standing over him suddenly appear on screen.)

(The SECURITY GUARD in the room sees JAKE and calls the alarm in over his walkie-talkie.)

SECURITY GUARD: (to walkie-talkie) {untranslated Chinese}

[BASEMENT]

(The alarms go off; there's a loud blaring buzzard and flashing red lights.)

(JAKE looks at the alarms. He turns and heads back to get KYLE.)

(He picks up the abandoned knife on the floor and starts cutting the ropes at KYLE'S wrists.)

JAKE: Come on. I'm cutting you loose.

KYLE: What are you doing?

(JAKE starts working on the ropes at KYLE'S ankles. KYLE looks around the room.)

JAKE: I'm getting you out of here.

KYLE: (shaking his head and breathing heavily) No ... Jake. Jake. There's no way out.

JAKE: Sure there is.

(JAKE reaches out with the knife in his hand to stand up. KYLE grabs JAKE'S wrist and holds the knife poised near his throat.)

KYLE: I want you to stab me in the throat. As hard as you can.

JAKE: (surprised) What?

KYLE: (breathing heavily) Jake, listen to me. They make me talk, people will die. This is what being an agent is all about. Now, do your job.

(JAKE looks from KYLE down to the knife in his hand, then back up at KYLE.)

FADE OUT.

(COMMERCIAL SET)

FADE IN.

[INT. CHINESE EMBASSY - BASEMENT -- NIGHT]

(We continue where we left off. With red alarm lights flashing and the buzzard blaring, KYLE has his hand over JAKE's holding the knife pointed at his throat. JAKE tugs his hand away from KYLE.)

JAKE: (firmly) My job ... (pause) ... is to get you out of here.

(JAKE pulls the last ropes away from KYLE'S wrists.)

JAKE: Now, come on.

(JAKE stands up and grabs KYLE who is still drugged and leans heavily on JAKE. They head out toward the door.)

(They exit the small inner room and head toward the door.)

KYLE: Jake, there's no way out.

(JAKE looks around the room and sees a thick red door with two signs on it:

DANGER HIGH VOLTAGE

(The second sign is a picture of a figure of a person in a big red circle with a red slash line through it.)

(JAKE looks straight ahead and sees a group of gun-carrying CHINESE SECURITY GUARDS turn the corner.)

[CUE SOUND: ENHANCED ABILITIES]

(JAKE concentrates on the generator behind the red door. He manages to surge the power and the circuitry overloads. There's a white electrical explosion in the room behind the red door.)

(The lights in the basement go out.)

(JAKE guides KYLE to a safe spot behind the wall. They both stand there a moment.)

KYLE: I can't see anything.

JAKE: You've got to trust me.

(JAKE looks back at the guards and finds them fumbling around in the dark for a moment. They split up and check the room anyway.)

(Camera zooms toward JAKE and we see his eyes adjust to the dark.)

[JAKE'S POV]

(The SECURITY GUARDS can be seen clearly, tinged in green, through his enhanced vision.)

(JAKE sees one set of guard walking cautiously through the room. He turns his head to the other side of the wall he and KYLE are standing against and sees the other set of guards walking cautiously through the room, their hand against the wall for guidance.)

(JAKE waits for the first set of guards to pass them by. He taps KYLE on the shoulder and they both walk out of the room.)

CUT TO:

[INT. NSA - SIGNIT OPERATIONS -- NIGHT -- CONTINUOUS]

[ON WALL MONITOR]

(The JAKE-dot and the KYLE-dot both reappear on the screen coming out of the stairwell.)

(With her eyes on the monitor, DIANE sees it first.)

DIANE: (to LOU) Look. Look!

(LOU looks up and they both watch as the two dots make their way rapidly toward the front door. LOU gets to her feet.)

LOU: They're alive.

CUT TO:

[EXT. CHINESE EMBASSY -- NIGHT]

(SECURITY GUARD run out of the darkened building. The alarms are still blaring, red lights still flashing.)

(JAKE leads KYLE out of the embassy. They climb up the outside basement stairs.)

KYLE: How are we doing this?

(JAKE peers over the concrete wall and sees the SECURITY GUARDS run across the grounds toward the parking lot.)

(Parking lot.)

(JAKE notices the parked cars in the lot.)

JAKE: Those new Cadillacs, they're completely computerized, right?

(JAKE turns and looks at KYLE.)

KYLE: (nods) Yeah.

JAKE: Yeah.

CUT TO:

[INT. NSA - SIGNIT OPERATIONS -- NIGHT -- CONTINUOUS]

(LOU and DIANE watch the monitor.)

[EXT. CHINESE EMBASSY -- NIGHT]

(JAKE concentrates on the Cadillac, Counsel License #CYRS 119. The car's engine roars to life, the headlights turn on.)

(The guards rush toward the Cadillac, surround it and blocking it from leaving. The Cadillac inches a few feet forward. The guards stop and back up a bit. The Cadillac drives forward and heads toward the closed gate. The Guards follow, their guns raised.)

(The car backs up toward the Guards pushing the line back. It backs up into the parking stall once again.)

(The car moves forward a couple of feet toward the guards and stops.)

(The guards fire on the car.)

(After a few moments, they stop firing. The lead Guard signals for the others to move in closer. They slowly approach the car.)

(One guard reaches out and opens the passenger door.)

(The car is empty.)

(They can see clear through to the other guard who opened the driver's door. There's no one inside.)

(Seeing the guards well occupied, KYLE steps out onto the sidewalk. JAKE follows. They both keep their eyes on the guards while making their way toward the catering van.)

(They keep their eyes on the guards who are still occupied with the empty car. Once they pass the parking lot, KYLE turns and finds himself face to face with MEI LING WONG'S gun.)

(She stands in the middle of the sidewalk blocking their escape, her gun pointed directly at KYLE'S head. Both men are out of breath.)

(KYLE swallows.)

(MEI LING walks slowly toward KYLE. She points the gun upward as she nears him. KYLE doesn't move.)

(Finally, she puts the gun down. JAKE moves around them nearer the catering van, but still facing the two agents.)

(With her eyes glued to KYLE'S she puts her hand to the back of his neck and turns him toward her. They kiss.)

MEI LING WONG: Go. Go, now.

(KYLE reaches out and touches her cheek.)

KYLE: Come with me.

(MEI LING glances at JAKE, then back to KYLE.)

MEI LING WONG: I can't.

(Off screen, shouts interrupt them. She turns and steps in between KYLE and the voices while pushing him toward the catering van.)

MEI LING WONG: You must go now. Go.

(JAKE pulls KYLE back with him toward the van. KYLE follows, then glances back at MEI LING.)

(She watches as he gets into the van.)

(KYLE closes the door shut, their eyes on each other as JAKE drives away.)

[INT. CATERING VAN (MOVING) - NIGHT - CONTINUOUS]

(As they leave, the GUARDS round the corner and run toward MEI LING.)

(KYLE turns and looks out the front as JAKE drives out.)

(Behind them, the GUARDS rush out to the parking lot and start firing on the van.)

(JAKE turns out of the parking lot and heads for the front gate.)

KYLE: You going to open the gates?

(JAKE smiles.)

JAKE: (shakes his head) Nope.

(KYLE braces himself against the door and the seat as JAKE crashes the van through the iron gate.

CUT TO:

[INT. NSA - SIGNIT OPERATIONS -- NIGHT -- CONTINUOUS]

(Back at headquarters, LOU is finishing up her phone call. DIANE paces the floor in the back her eyes on the wall monitor.)

LOU: (to phone) Thank you. Thank you.

(She hangs up the phone and turns to the other AGENTS in the room.)

LOU: They're out.

(DIANE turns around, relieved. She takes a deep breath, trying to regain control over her emotions. She leans back against the workstation.)

(LOU sees DIANE struggling and walks over to her.)

(DIANE notices LOU and looks at her.)

LOU: That fear thing ...

(DIANE looks away, afraid she's going to start crying.)

LOU: (sympathetic) ... it never goes away.

(DIANE nods. LOU leaves DIANE alone. DIANE takes off her glasses and presses her fingertips to the bridge of her nose.)

(She sighs.)

CUT TO:

[EXT. LINCOLN MEMORIAL - MORNING]

(Open on the Lincoln Memorial. JAKE and KYLE sit on the steps, drink beer ... and bond.)

KYLE: Bali. On the beach. She was wearing a white dress ... no shoes.

JAKE: Georgetown. Freshman year. I have no idea what she was wearing. I just remember her eyes.

KYLE: D.C. She held a gun to my head ... then she kissed me.

JAKE: I never kissed her.

(JAKE takes a sip of his beer.)

(Camera holds on a view on the back of the two men sitting on the steps with the Washington Monument in front of them.)

FADE OUT.
