ANGEL

When Doyle first appeared in Angel's apartment, he knew the story—from how Angel had been turned, to why he'd left Sunnydale. But over the few short months he worked for Angel Investigations, Doyle learned to know the vampire with a soul better than almost anyone save for perhaps Buffy and Whistler.

Working as Messenger to Angel's Warrior, Doyle also became Angel's friend. Doyle refused to let Angel brood alone in the dark, but instead tried to force him to deal with the people he was meant to save by dragging him to sports bars to play lame trivia games against drunks around the world, or simply interacting with people one on one rather than swooping in from rooftops like Batman and then melting back into the night. Doyle reminded Angel that the world he was avoiding was his only shot at redemption. He advocated hiring Cordelia as a "humanising influence" in the office. Angel, however, spotted that Doyle had an ulterior motive (namely, he thought Cordelia was gorgeous) and Doyle spent the first several weeks of their acquaintance trying to get Angel to put in a good word for him with the stunning brunette.

Just as Doyle tried to bring Angel back into the land of the living, so to speak, Angel forced Doyle to leave the sidelines and join in the fray. As a result, Doyle began to regain the confidence and sense of self-worth he had lost after he hit bottom in his early 20s, and despite his assurances that he didn't have a noble bone in his body, Doyle sacrificed himself so that Angel could go on fighting. If nothing else, Angel showed Doyle that he could be more than he was, and was more than he realised.
