How To Save Your Documents in the Proper Format in MS Word

1. Under the "Tools" pull-down menu, select "Options"

2. Under "Autoformat" make sure that under "Replace As You Type" there is NO CHECK MARK in the "Smart Quotes" box

3. Under the "Edit" pull-down menu, select "Select All"

4. Change the Font to Courier 12pt

5. Under the "Edit" pull-down menu, select "Replace"

6. In the "Replace" box, replace all " and ' marks with " and ' (this will remove all the "Smart Quotes")

7. Under the "edit" pull-down menu, select "Replace"

8. In the "Replace" box, replace ^t marks with five spaces (this will remove all the Tabs and replace them with five spaces insread) or ^p (this will remove all the Tabs and replace them with a hard page return)

9. Under the "File" pull-down menu, select "Save As"

10. In the "File Name" field, choose an 8 letter max filename with .TXT as the extension (example: wouldyou.txt)

11. In the "Save as Type" field, choose "Text Only With Line Breaks"

12. Close the file.

13. When Word asks you "This document contains formatting that cannot be saved in text format. Do you want to save changes to ?" Select "NO"

Note: If you select "yes", then the document will be saved as a Word Document, and you must open it back up and repeat steps 9 through 13 again.
