SUMMARY: A Special Board of Inquiry is convened to review the viability of the
Special Unit when Jake deliberately disobeys an order to execute an Enemy of the
State.
JAKE 2.0
1X10: THE SPY WHO REALLY LIKED ME
COLD OPEN:
[VARIOUS CLIPS FROM PREVIOUS EPISODES]
KYLE: (V.O.) Jake Foley was an ordinary guy until a freak accident
transformed him into the world's first computer-enhanced man. Millions of
microscopic computers interface with his biochemistry and make him stronger and
faster, able to see and hear farther than normal men. They give him the power
to control technology with his brain. Jake Foley -- America's secret weapon.
He takes on missions no ordinary agent can perform. He is the ultimate human
upgrade.
CUT TO:
[EXT. VARIOUS WASHINGTON D.C. (STOCK) - DAY]
[EXT. NSA BUILDING (STOCK) - DAY]
[INT. NSA - HALLWAY -- DAY]
(JAKE walks through the hallway. He looks angry and a tad upset.)
[INT. NSA - LOU'S OFFICE - DAY]
(LOU is talking on the phone when JAKE walks in.)
JAKE: How could you?
LOU: (to phone) Let me call you back.
(She hangs up as JAKE reaches her desk. She looks at JAKE.)
LOU: It's a little something called chain of command.
JAKE: It's a little something called betrayal.
LOU: I had orders and I followed them.
JAKE: I promised her she'd be safe. I gave her my word!
LOU: That wasn't your promise to give.
(JAKE turns and sees the two armed GUARDS at the door. He looks at LOU.)
JAKE: (incredulously) Are you having me arrested?
(The lead GUARD steps forward.)
GUARD: Deputy Director Beckett, Agent Foley, we have orders to bring you both
upstairs.
(JAKE and LOU look at each other. She looks just as surprised as he does.)
CUT TO:
[INT. NSA - SAT OPS - DAY]
(KYLE is on his cell phone speaking with someone.)
KYLE: What do you mean he's not on that flight? I have the manifest right
here.
(KYLE sighs as he listens. He sighs.)
(Behind him, two armed GUARDS walk up to KYLE. He turns around to look at
them.)
CUT TO:
[INT. NSA - RESEARCH LAB - DAY]
(DIANE gets a candy bar out of the cabinet. She walks back to her computer,
takes her seat and starts to open the candy when two armed GUARDS enter the lab.
They approach her. She glances down at the guns, then back up to the GUARDS.)
DIANE: Can I help you?
CUT TO:
[INT. NSA - BOARD OF INQUIRY -- CONFERENCE ROOM - DAY]
(The door opens and the GUARDS lead LOU, JAKE, KYLE and DIANE inside the
conference room.)
JAKE: What is going on?
LOU: It's an emergency Board of Inquiry. It's like a trial.
KYLE: Only worse.
DIANE: Okay, I don't understand. What did we do?
(They walk to stand behind the first row of tables as the three members of the
Board of Inquiry take their seats at the front. Also in the room is a
stenographer recording the session.)
SKERRIT: Director Beckett, Agents Duarte, Foley, Dr .Hughes. This
Emergency Board of Inquiry has been convened to decide the future of your
Special Ops unit.
LOU: Jim, we should have received notice.
JENNINGS: This board is under no obligation to notify you of anything.
SKERRIT: Lou, considering what's happened in the last few days, there is
enormous pressure to justify Agent Foley's behavior. Don't worry. This isn't a
witch hunt. We just want the truth.
WARNER: It is now 8:47. I'm calling this hearing to order.
Please sit.
(They take their seats.)
SKERRIT: Let the record show that six years ago, NSA began working on
project Free Target exploring the use of nanites -
(The monitors in front of the agents show the molecular construction of the
nanites, then switch to show the standard x-ray picture of the nanites
integrating themselves into and along the human spinal column.)
SKERRIT: ... molecular-sized computers to enhance our agents' field
behavior. Several months ago, a lab accident resulted in the premature
introduction ...
(The monitors change to show security video footage of the lab accident from
episode 1X01: "The Tech" where Dr. Gage is shot and JAKE is infected by the
nanites.)
SKERRIT: ... of millions of these nanites into a human subject, Jake
Foley, at the time, a computer technician. At Director Beckett's request, Foley
was promoted to full agent status and a Special Unit was formed with him at its
core.
JENNINGS: Now, since that time, this unit, at best, has produced uneven
results.
WARNER: Technology isn't the issue here. Agent Foley's enhanced
physical powers and endurance, along with his ability to interface with
electronic devices and computers, are all very impressive.
JENNINGS: Impressive, yes, however, this program was designed for a
trained professional, used to following orders, something Mr. Foley clearly is
not. Recently, and most egregiously, he disobeyed a direct order to execute an
enemy of the state and aided that same individual in an attempt to assassinate a
foreign official.
(JAKE stares at LOU. LOU takes the opportunity to speak. She gets to her
feet.)
LOU: If I may ask, what are the possible outcomes of this ... "Inquiry"?
SKERRIT: Either the board is satisfied with your explanations, or we
terminate the program.
(Camera moves from LOU to DIANE to KYLE to JAKE, who shakes his head in
disgust.)

[NSA SEAL ON MONITOR]
[INT. NSA - BOARD OF INQUIRY -- CONFERENCE ROOM - DAY]
(The Board of Inquiry resumes.)
SKERRIT: This is not a trial in the formal sense.
JAKE: What does that mean?
KYLE: We don't get a lawyer.
SKERRIT: Lou, could you please identify yourself for the record, and tell
us what happened regarding this operation starting November 17.
LOU: Deputy Director Louise Beckett, NSA. On the 17th of this month, there was
a break-in at the Densmore Research Facility in Alexandria, Virginia.
CUT TO:
[INT. DENSMORE RESEARCH FACILITY - DAY - FLASHBACK]
(ANGELA HAMILTON grabs the tray on the desk and slams it against the SECURITY
GUARD'S head with a force that stuns him instantly. She grabs him, pulls him
off his chair, and uses the momentum to knock him into the wall, further
stunning him.)
(She grabs the SECURITY GUARD'S head and lifts him eye-level to the security
scanner. She holds up his hair as the scanner scans his eye and clears him for
entry into the locked room. She tosses the SECURITY GUARD to the ground, turns
and enters the room when the door opens.)
(The door closes behind her, lingering on the sign:
RESTRICTED
ACCESS ONLY
BIOHAZARD MATERIALS BEYOND THIS POINT
CUT TO:
END OF FLASHBACK
[INT. NSA - BOARD OF INQUIRY -- CONFERENCE ROOM - DAY]
LOU: And the intruder stole three vials of a controlled substance.
SKERRIT: Thank you.
(JAKE leans toward LOU.)
JAKE: Why did you tell him about ... ?
JENNINGS: Agent Foley, if there's something you need to say to the board,
will you please address us directly?
JAKE: Okay, well, I was just wondering ...
(JENNINGS holds up a hand and points to the stenographer on the side.)
JENNINGS: Give your name and position, please, for the record.
JAKE: Uh, Agent Jake Foley, the human subject with millions of tiny robots
inside. What I wanted to say was that it's important, for the purpose of this
inquiry to know know that the stolen substance is varcon gas.
JENNINGS: Stop the record.
SKERRIT: Agent Foley, this proceeding is not about varcon gas. It's
about your actions in the field.
JAKE: Well, they're both kind of related.
JENNINGS: I am strongly cautioning you against bringing that up again.
(to the stenographer) You will strike Agent Foley's comments from the official
record, thank you.
WARNER: Why don't we talk about your personal involvement in the
case? The things you experienced firsthand. From the top, if you don't mind.
JAKE: From the top. Okay. Uh, well, I guess it all started when I got an
urgent phone call from my immediate superior, Agent Duarte.
CUT TO:
[INT. RESTAURANT/BAR - NIGHT -- FLASHBACK]
(JAKE walks into the restaurant/bar and heads for KYLE.)
JAKE: Hey, I got here as fast as I could. What do you need?
KYLE: You. (KYLE glances nervously behind him, then back at JAKE.) You know
this girl I've been seeing, Megan Reilly?
JAKE: Yeah.
(KYLE turns to the bar where a beautiful, leggy blonde sits at the counter. She
smiles and waves at KYLE.)
KYLE: Her sister's in town for a few days.
(JAKE eyes widen as he realizes exactly what KYLE'S asking.)
JAKE: Uh, no. No. No.
KYLE: Wait, wait, wait, Jake. She's really cute.
JAKE: (doubtfully) Uh-huh.
KYLE: Look, all you have to do is hang out with her one, maybe two hours, tops.
JAKE: No, forget it. I have a hard enough time talking to girls I actually
know. Kyle ...
(JAKE stops as he sees the other beautiful, leggy blonde talking with MEGAN
REILLY at the bar.)
JAKE: Well, on the other hand, anything I can do to help a friend out of a jam.
KYLE: Yeah.
(JAKE smiles and follows KYLE to the bar.)
SHORT TIME CUT TO:
[INT. RESTAURANT / BAR - NIGHT - FLASHBACK -- CONTINUOUS]
(KYLE and MEGAN REILLY hold hands and laugh intimately at the dinner table.)
(Camera pulls away and zooms across the bar where JAKE and JANET REILLY sit at
another table. JANET gazes at JAKE as she plays with the straw in her drink.)
JAKE: So, you really like those daiquiris?
JANET: (shakes her head) Jake, Jake.
JAKE: Janet. Janet.
JANET: How do you go out there every day not knowing if you're ever
coming back?
JAKE: Well, I pretty much know that I am coming back, 'cause, like I said, I'm
a computer tech, so we come back every morning, except weekends.
JANET: (nods) Right. Right. Hush, hush. On the QT. (she giggles) I'm
sorry, but I don't know why I thought you could talk about it.
JAKE: Uh, I can talk about it. I just did.
JANET: And you told me nothing. You are very good.
(She sighs and pushes her drink aside. She runs her fingers along the back of
his hand while her foot rubs suggestively against his leg.)
JANET: You know, I just feel so grateful knowing that there are men out
there like you doing what you do.
JAKE: It's getting kind of late.
JANET: It's only 9:30.
JAKE: Yeah? Feels a lot later.
JANET: C'mere you.
(JANET smiles, stands up and grabs JAKE. She kisses him solidly on the lips.
They both promptly fall on the floor.)
JAKE: Ow.
JANET: Are you okay?
JAKE: Yeah. Yep, I think just maybe a chipped tooth.
JANET: Want to go back to your place?
JENNINGS: (v.o.) Agent Foley.
CUT TO:
END OF FLASHBACK
[INT. NSA - BOARD OF INQUIRY -- CONFERENCE ROOM - DAY]
JAKE: You told me to start from the top.
JENNINGS: Yes, Agent Foley, regarding the mission.
JAKE: Right. Right. Anyway, after heretofore described events at the bar,
Agent Duarte got a call from Sat Ops instructing us to come in immediately ...
CUT TO:
[INT. NSA - SAT OPS - NIGHT - FLASHBACK]
(LOU explains the current assignment.)
LOU: Three vials of nitrous varcon were stolen from the Densmore lab at exactly
1930 hours.
(On the monitor behind her, the chemical composition and explanation of the
stolen component is up on screen.)
LOU: This is the deadliest V series nerve agent on the planet.
(JAKE sighs.)
LOU: What is it, Jake?
JAKE: I just didn't think the U.S. manufactured biological weapons.
LOU: We don't. Varcon has never officially been produced or tested in this
country, never will be. Understood?
(She looks at JAKE. He understands.)
CARVER: Can the security guard I.D. the intruder?
LOU: No, all he remembers is a cinder-block wall flying at him at 30 JENNINGS an
hour. We do have audio feed from the break-in.
KYLE: That's not a lot to go on.
LOU: No, it isn't. When we find this individual, executive action obtains.
JAKE: Executive action?
KYLE: Shoot to kill.
JAKE: We can do that?
KYLE: When the order comes from the President we can.
LOU: We've just received echelon chatter indicating a potential buyer in Santa
Costa.
KYLE: The rebels?
LOU: That's what I want you to find out.
(KYLE turns to head out. JAKE rushes to catch up with him.)
JAKE: Can I come?
CUT TO:
END OF FLASHBACK.
[INT. NSA - BOARD OF INQUIRY -- CONFERENCE ROOM - DAY]
JENNINGS: Director Beckett, Agent Foley's unique skills didn't seem to
have any specific application to this mission, so would you mind explaining to
the board why you would risk our agents and our investment in nanotechnology by
sending him in?
LOU: Jake isn't an appliance. He's a member of our intelligence community
being trained for advanced field work. He goes on missions. And by the way,
any other agent would have ended up dead on that assignment.
JENNINGS: Would any other agent have compromised the mission to such an
extent?
WARNER: All right, all right. Ease off, Mr. Jennings. Dr.
Hughes.
(DIANE looks up.)
DIANE: Me?
(She nervously gets to her feet.)
DIANE: Yes, I'm Dr. Hughes. Um ...
(She looks around, then sits back down in her seat.)
DIANE: I'm the scientist in charge of the nanotechnology program. I took over
from Dr. Gage. He was, well, he was shot. He died.
WARNER: Dr. Hughes, part of your job is preparing Agent Foley for
his work in the field.
DIANE: Yes.
WARNER: Please, tell the board of inquiry about your examination
of Agent Foley before he left for Santa Costa.
DIANE: Um ...
(DIANE glances nervously at JAKE. JAKE suddenly remembers exactly what happened
at that examination and turns to look at DIANE.)
DIANE: Well, I was giving him some shots.
CUT TO:
[INT. NSA - RESEARCH LAB - DAY - FLASHBACK]
(DIANE is giving JAKE a shot in the arm. She's laughing.)
DIANE: I, uh ... heard about your hot date.
(She sticks him with the needle. JAKE winces.)
JAKE: Ow. What did Kyle tell you?
DIANE: Nothing, just that she came on a little strong.
JAKE: I've had people shooting at me and been less afraid.
DIANE: Well, I guess you could consider it a compliment in a scary, nutty,
clinically-obsessive kind of way.
JAKE: Yeah. Hey, Diane, listen, I need to ask you a question. It's kind of a
... doctor-patient thing.
DIANE: Sure.
JAKE: Okay ... uh, you know, it's funny, I never had a female doctor before.
(Wondering what he's talking bout, DIANE scrunches her face and asks.)
DIANE: Do you have a rash?
JAKE: What? No.
DIANE: Oh, I ... um, so, then what's this about?
JAKE: Uh ... well, okay, let's just say that the girl last night wasn't totally
insane, okay? And that I wanted to take her back to my place. Is it safe?
DIANE: You mean ... um ... Well, yeah, I mean, if you use a condom.
JAKE: No, yeah. I-I know that. I just... I mean with the nanites and
everything?
DIANE: Well, based on research, I can say with some degree of certainty that
the possibility of transference/infection, is statistically low enough to be
considered virtually nonexistent.
JAKE: Uh-huh. So, you're telling me I can have sex, right?
DIANE: I should do some tests just to make sure.
(She turns around and picks up a plastic cup while JAKE puts his shirt back on.
She holds the cup out to him.)
JAKE: I'm not thirsty, thanks.
DIANE: Uh ...
JAKE: (realizes) Oh. Uh, so I should, uh ...
DIANE: Yeah. The bathroom is just over there, and ... there's a lock, yeah.
JAKE: Yeah.
(JAKE looks at the cup, then heads out the room.)
(After he leaves, DIANE exhales. She turns around to get back to work. KYLE
walks into the lab.)
KYLE: Hey, Diane.
DIANE: Hi.
KYLE: What's Jake up to?
(How appropriate. She laughs nervously.)
CUT TO
END OF FLASHBACK
[INT. NSA - BOARD OF INQUIRY -- CONFERENCE ROOM - DAY]
DIANE: Um ...
(She turns and looks at JAKE. Their eyes meet.)
KYLE: My name is agent Kyle Duarte. I'm Agent Foley's Direct Superior and the
person most involved in his training.
SKERRIT: Do you believe that Agent Foley was a benefit to your operation
in Santa Costa?
KYLE: Yes.
SKERRIT: Please, tell us about the operation.
KYLE: We arrived in Santa Costa at 0800 and made contact with our local agents.
CUT TO:
[EXT. SANTA COSTA - MARKETPLACE - DAY - FLASHBACK]
(Camera opens on ANGELA HAMILTON in the second floor hotel room as seen through
the window. Camera zooms down to the marketplace below.)
KYLE: (v.o.) Two hours later, we had the alleged buyer and seller in our
sights -- a male latino and a blond caucasian female they were meeting at an
apartment in the market district.
(Camera zooms to the armed soldiers walking toward the truck. Camera zooms to
the vendor selling vegetables on the side of the street. Camera zooms to KYLE
and JAKE sitting in the car.)
JAKE: Notice how the travel brochures never mention monsoons? What's up with
that?
(KYLE looks amusedly at JAKE and shakes his head. He turns to look back out
the window.)
JAKE: Oh, hey, hold on.
CUE SOUND: ENHANCED SIGHT
(Through the crowds at the far end of the marketplace, JAKE sees the Latino and
the Blond Caucasian woman. She walks over to him. He nods his head. She takes
his arm and they both turn to walk away.)
JAKE: Yeah, it's the buyer and the seller.
KYLE: (to radio) Oye, Jorge, estan en camino.
(KYLE starts the car and moves forward. However, this is Santa Costa. There
are people in the street and poor driving etiquette. A van drives out and
blocks KYLE'S path. He brakes.)
JAKE: Whoa, whoa!
(JAKE gets out of the car and runs to catch up with the woman and the latino.)
VOICE: Hey, hey! Muevate!
(JAKE runs and weaves his way through the people on the street.)
JAKE: Excuse me!
VOICE: Ifuera de aqui, oye!
(JAKE continues to run and weave through the crowd to get to the couple far
ahead of him.)
JAKE: Excuse me.
JAKE: Excuse me.
JAKE: Excuse me.
(JAKE reaches the end of the marketplace and enters the alleyway between the two
buildings.)
(KYLE has gotten out of the car and pursues JAKE on foot.)
(Cut to: The Blonde Woman and Latino continue to walk with each other across
the marketplace.)
(JAKE reaches the end of the alleyway. A car pulls up in front of him blocking
the exit. JAKE bumps into the car and scrambles over it. He stops, looks
around, then continues the pursuit.)
(JAKE bumps into a person doing his laundry.)
JAKE: Sorry, sorry.
(JAKE continues to pursue the couple.)
(Cut to: The couple exits the end of the alleyway crowded with people. JAKE
stops when the crowd between him and the couple is too thick. He looks around,
then climbs up the building.)
(Cut to: JAKE reaches the rooftop and runs up across the building roof.)
(Cut to: The couple continues to leisurely make their way.)
CUE SOUND: ENHANCED ABILITY
(JAKE jumps down from the rooftop and lands on the ground. He straightens and
pulls his gun on the couple.)
JAKE: Don't move! No se mueve, por favor.
(He looks at the couple.)
(Cut to: From between the buildings, ANGELA HAMILTON steps out and sees JAKE
stop the couple.)
SHORT TIME CUT TO:
[MARKETPLACE - DAY - CONTINUOUS]
(The OFFICER opens the metal briefcase and shows the vials to KYLE and JAKE.)
OFFICER: We found all three vials in the apartment.
KYLE: Muy bien. Esta todo que puedes llevar.
(translation): Very well, you can take them away now.
(Camera moves aside and we see the latino and the blonde woman being arrested
and taken away in handcuffs.)
OFFICER: Tenemos el varcon.
(translation): We have the Varcon.
(in Spanish): Dos sospechosos han sido arrestados.
(translation): The suspects have been arrested.
(in Spanish): Si, si. Los tres frascos.
(translation): Yes, the three vials.
(The officers lead the suspects to the vehicle. KYLE finishes with the OFFICERS
and walks toward JAKE.)
JAKE: They say anything?
KYLE: Oh, you know, the usual -- "We're innocent, we don't know how it got
here." We can have a talk with them later on. Why don't you go back to the
hotel? I'll call you when I know something.
JAKE: Are you sure? You sure there's nothing I can do? 'Cause I know I was
jet-lagged before, but I'm pumped now, I'm ready.
CUT TO:
[INT. HOTEL - DAY - FLASHBACK - LATER]
(JAKE is flat on his back, asleep on the bed. Completely dead to the world.)
(The phone rings and JAKE groggily gets up. He reaches over and answers it.)
JAKE: Hello.
DIANE: (over phone) Hey, Jake. It's Diane.
INTERCUT WITH:
[INT. NSA - RESEARCH LAB - DAY]
DIANE: I, uh, heard you already caught the bad guys. Congratulations.
(JAKE is still flat on the bed.)
JAKE: Oh, thanks.
DIANE: And I, uh, I got your test results back, and you are... good to go.
(With that, JAKE sits up.)
JAKE: Wait, uh ... you mean, I ... ?
DIANE: I mean that you can have sexual relations without fear of, uh ...
"intrahominid cross transference."
(Oh, yeah. JAKE'S happy. He pumps the air with his fist.)
JAKE: Ah ... yeah!
DIANE: What?
JAKE: Uh, nothing, nothing. Thanks, Diane.
DIANE: Well, of course, uh ... it's important to find the right girl, right? I
mean, not in the strictly scientific sense of the word "important," but it's
important.
JAKE: (nods) Yeah, yeah, sure, absolutely. It's not like I'm going to run out
of here and pick up the first girl I see.
(JAKE laughs and bounds off the bed.)
CUT TO:
[EXT. HOTEL / BAR -- NIGHT]
(The camera follows a couple of women into the hotel.)
(JAKE walks down the step and looks around. He heads for the bar and approaches
two women sitting there.)
JAKE: Buenas noches.
(The two women stand up and leave the bar.)
JAKE: (to himself) Adios.
(JAKE sits down dejectedly at the bar and looks at himself in the mirror on the
wall.)
JAKE: (to himself) Yep, you are one super stud.
(Through the reflection in the mirror, we see the blonde-haired woman approach
JAKE.)
ANGELA: You mind if I join you?
(He turns around to look at her.)
JAKE: Yeah. Yeah! I mean, yeah, you can join me.
ANGELA: Are you sure? 'Cause you can tell me to get lost.
(He laughs.)
JAKE: That's usually my line.
(She holds out her hand and introduces herself.)
ANGELA: Angela Wright.
JAKE: Uh, Jake Foley.
(They shake.)
ANGELA: Hi.
JAKE: Hey.
FADE OUT
(COMMERCIAL SET)
FADE IN.
[NSA SEAL]
[INT. NSA - BOARD OF INQUIRY -- CONFERENCE ROOM - DAY]
(The monitors on the tables show a profile of ANGELA HAMILTON.)
JENNINGS: For the record, Agent Foley, is this the woman you picked up in
the Santa Costa hotel bar?
JAKE: I didn't pick her up.
JENNINGS: All right, you began a relationship with this woman in the
middle of your mission to Santa Costa. Yes?
JAKE: No. No. I thought the mission was over.
JENNINGS: And you claim here that you did not know that she was an enemy
in possession of a stolen weapon of mass destruction.
JAKE: I don't claim. I didn't know any of that.
JENNINGS: Well, tell us, Agent Foley. What exactly did you know about
her?
CUT TO:
[EXT. HOTEL / BAR - NIGHT -- FLASHBACK]
(JAKE and ANGELA HAMILTON sit at the bar having drinks and a laugh.)
JAKE: You're double jointed! So am I.
ANGELA: Well, that does it, then. We should get married.
JAKE: Yes, yes. Think of all the things that we have in common. (He pauses.)
We're both in sales. We both went to schools on the east coast. We both met
Katie Couric.
ANGELA: Yes.
JAKE: Well, I saw her.
ANGELA: That counts. Before we get married, I would like to know, um,
do you have a girlfriend?
JAKE: No. No. You?
ANGELA: No, no girlfriend ... or boyfriend, or husband.
JAKE: Okay. Well, then, uh ... there's just one more question.
ANGELA: Then we get married for sure.
JAKE: Oh, yeah.
ANGELA: Yeah.
(The waitress puts two shots in front of them.)
JAKE: Thank you. Um ... Why'd you come up to me tonight?
ANGEL HAMILTON: It's very trustworthy.
JAKE: Thanks.
(They drink.)
JAKE: I get it from my mom's side.
ANGELA: Hmm. The bedroom eyes from dad?
JAKE: So, uh ... since I have a nice face, and, uh, I like you ... seems like
you like me, so ... what do you think about continuing this, uh ...
(He motions 'up' with his thumb.)
ANGELA: (deliberately misunderstanding) On the roof?
JAKE: Well, I was thinking my room, or-or maybe your room. Or ... ok-okay, the
roof, if it's ... (She laughs.) ... or you can just slap me in the face, and
get it over with.
ANGELA: I didn't say no.
CUT TO:
[BEDROOM - LATER - FLASHBACK - CONTINUOUS]
(JAKE and ANGELA HAMILTON are kissing madly, desperately, noisily in his room.
The lamps and other things on the counter is pushed aside as they slowly move
from the dresser to the bed, never breaking the kiss, their hands quickly
unbuttoning the other's shirts.)
(In a crazy, awkward dance, they cross the room, disrobing along the way. They
crash into the tv set as they kiss.)
(They manage to make it through the bedroom doors and nearly make it to the bed.
They fall down out of camera frame. ANGELA gets her top off. They pop back up
in the camera frame and we see JAKE'S shirt is off as well.)
JAKE: You really are double-jointed.
(He picks her up, kisses her and sets her on the dresser. She screams in
surprise. They continue to kiss. JAKE picks her up from the dresser, turns her
around and they manage to finally make it to the bed.)
(Various cuts of them in bed. Tumble, tumble, tumble. Heavy breathing.)
FADE TO RED:
END OF FLASHBACK.
[INT. NSA - BOARD OF INQUIRY -- CONFERENCE ROOM - DAY]
WARNER: So, she did go to your room?
JAKE: Yes.
WARNER: And you had NSA hardware, which, if breached, could have
compromised your mission?
(KYLE gets to his feet and interrupts the line of questioning.)
KYLE: Excuse me. He thought the mission was over.
SKERRIT: Sit down, Agent Duarte.
WARNER: What's your point?
KYLE: That Jake had no idea our case was falling apart.
CUT TO:
[INT. SANTA COSTA POLICE STATION - INTERVIEW ROOM -- FLASHBACK]
(KYLE interviews the LATINO.)
APARTMENT MAN: I told you, I don't know how that stuff got into my apartment.
(KYLE walks into frame holding a file folder.)
KYLE: It says here that's not your primary residence.
(He throws the file folder flat on the table in front of them.)
APARTMENT MAN: I have a house outside of town.
KYLE: But the apartment is where you conduct business, right? Charming view,
buy a little nerve gas?
APARTMENT MAN: No.
(KYLE leans forward.)
KYLE: Then why'd you rent it?
CUT TO:
END OF FLASHBACK
[INT. NSA - BOARD OF INQUIRY -- CONFERENCE ROOM - DAY]
WARNER: He was having an affair?
KYLE: (nods) With a woman from his office. Said it was his first one.
WARNER: Well, that'll teach him.
CUT TO:
[INT. SANTA COSTA POLICE STATION - INTERVIEW ROOM -- FLASHBACK]
(Back in the interview room, KYLE is looking at a folder. There's an OFFICER
there. KYLE puts the folder down and takes out his cell phone.)
KYLE: (v.o.) That's when we got the test results back from the lab. The vials
we found that morning were fakes. I phoned Director Beckett to give her the
news, and that's when I called Agent Foley.
CUT TO:
END OF FLASHBACK
[INT. NSA - BOARD OF INQUIRY -- CONFERENCE ROOM - DAY]
SKERRIT: And what was his response?
KYLE: I wasn't able to reach him.
CUT TO:
[INT. SANTA COSTA HOTEL - JAKE'S ROOM -- FLASHBACK]
(JAKE is fast asleep. The spot on the bed next to him is empty. Camera zooms
over to the next room where we see ANGELA HAMITLON opening JAKE'S laptop.)
(Camera zooms back to the bed where JAKE is not sleeping any more. He's sitting
up on the bed. Listening.)
CUE SOUND: ENHANCED HEARING
(Cut to: Camera emphasis of ANGELA HAMILTON touching the keys on the laptop and
her bracelet scraping against the pad.)
(Quick flashback to: [INT. NSA - SAT OPS] CARVER plays the audio on the
monitor. It's the same sound.)
LOU: We have audio feed from the break-in.
(End of flashback. Resume to present.)
(JAKE recognizes the sounds.)
(Cut to: On the laptop monitor, the screen reads: NEW DEVICE FOUND.)
(JAKE looks around, then slowly gets up off the bed. He heads for his cell
phone and dials. He starts to put his clothes on as well.)
INTERCUT WITH:
[INT. SANTA COSTA POLICE STATION - INTERVIEW ROOM]
(KYLE'S phone rings. He answers it.)
KYLE: Yeah.
JAKE: Kyle.
KYLE: Jake. I've been trying to get ahold of you.
(JAKE is putting his shirt on.)
JAKE: Yeah. I'm in my room with a woman.
KYLE: Well, good for you.
JAKE: No, no, she's the one who stole the vials.
KYLE: What? Stall her. I'll be there in 15 minutes.
JAKE: It's too late.
KYLE: No, Jake, she still has the varcon. The vials we picked up were fake.
JAKE: What?
KYLE: You have a shoot-to-kill order. Enforce it.
(ANGELA finishes with the laptop and closes it. She quietly zips up her bag,
pulls the strap over her shoulder, and gets up to leave.)
JAKE: I think you've got something of mine. I need you to put down that
handbag.
ANGELA: This isn't what ...
JAKE: Now.
(As she removes the bag from her shoulder, she swings it and hits JAKE in the
head with her bag. It wraps around him neck, surprising him for a moment.)
JAKE: Oh!
(She kicks him in the stomach and he falls back over the chair. He quickly gets
up to stop her. ANGELA steps forward and swings. JAKE blocks the blow. She
follows it up and he blocks it again.)
(He grabs her arm and throws her against the wall. She slams against it and
lands on her feet.)
(She glances to the side and sees the gun on the floor. JAKE looks and he also
sees the gun on the floor.)
(They both dive for their guns. ANGELA dives for her bag while JAKE dives for
his gun.)
(They both get it out and point their guns at each other.)
ANGELA: Don't shoot!
JAKE: You don't shoot!
ANGELA: Put down your gun!
JAKE: You put it down!
ANGELA: I'm CIA. I'm going to show you my ID. Don't get trigger
happy.
(She reaches down and tosses JAKE her ID.)
ANGELA: Whoever you're working for, it's pretty obvious we're after
the same thing.
JAKE: Yeah, I think you already have it.
(JAKE picks it up, opens it and looks at it. It reads:
{photo} CENTRAL INTELLIGENCE AGENCY
CIA
ANGELA HAMILTON, AGENT
SEX: F
WEIGHT: 105
HEIGHT: 5-4
HAIR: BLACK)
JAKE: Angela Hamilton? You said your name was Angela Wright.
ANGELA: I'm an intelligence officer. What do you expect? I'm sure
your real name isn't Jake Foley.
JAKE: Of course not.
ANGELA: Why don't you just put your gun down, and we'll figure this
out together?
JAKE: No, no. I'm not putting my gun down.
ANGELA: Fine. (She puts her gun down.) Here. (And places it on the
floor.) There. (She puts her hands back up.) Okay?
(JAKE steps forward.)
ANGELA: Now, who are you?
JAKE: NSA
ANGELA: Great. You're after the varcon as well. I can't believe our
idiot agencies. You'd think they'd have figured this out by now -- tell one
hand what the other is doing.
JAKE: Why were you on my laptop?
ANGELA: I knew you were a wrong number. What kind of watch salesman
would be caught dead wearing that?!
(JAKE glances down at his wrist watch. It reads:
MON ' 03 8-11
9:09 46 )
ANGELA: I needed to find out who you really were and what you were up
to.
JAKE: What, by sleeping with me?
ANGELA: Let's get this all straightened out. You call the CIA, call
your people.
JAKE: Oh, I will.
(ANGELA gets to her feet. She motions to his gun.)
ANGELA: Could you please?
(JAKE slowly lowers his gun. ANGELA kicks JAKE hard on the back of his knees.
He drops down to the floor. She follows it up with a kick to his head.)
(JAKE falls face down to the floor.)
ANGELA: (sighs) Thank you.
(ANGELA leaves.)
FADE OUT
(COMMERCIAL SET)
FADE IN.
[NSA SEAL]
[INT. NSA - BOARD OF INQUIRY -- CONFERENCE ROOM - DAY]
(KYLE gets to his feet.)
JENNINGS: For the record, Agent Duarte, Jake Foley received a direct
order from you to kill a rogue agent and simply ignored it?
(beat)
KYLE: Yes. But I'm not going to stand here and tell you this operation was a
complete failure.
SKERRIT: Duly noted.
JENNINGS: Now, perhaps you could regale us with some facts.
KYLE: I arrived at Agent Foley's hotel room
CUT TO:
[INT. SANTA COSTA HOTEL - JAKE'S ROOM -- FLASHBACK]
(KYLE walks into the hotel room, gun drawn. He searches from room to room and
finds no one there.)
KYLE: (v.o.) ... shortly after his altercation with Angela Hamilton.
(He puts his gun away and takes out his cell phone. He dials.)
KYLE: (to radio) Lou? It's Kyle. We have a problem.
CUT TO:
[INT. SANTA COSTA ROADWAY - DAY -- FLASHBACK]
(The jeep turns the street corner. ANGELA is driving and she's on the phone.)
ANGELA: (to phone) Buenos dias, Colonel. Yes, I have all three. I
expect 80 apiece.
INTERCUT WITH:
[UNDISCLOSED LOCATION]
CAPTAIN GARCIA: I hope you take dollars.
ANGELA: That's all I'll take.
CAPTAIN GARCIA: Where are you?
ANGELA: Don't worry, I'll be there.
(ANGELA hangs up the phone and continues to drive. Camera backs away from the
wind shield and moves lower to show the underside of the jeep.)
(JAKE is clinging to the bottom of the moving vehicle.)
CUT TO:
END OF FLASHBACK
[INT. NSA - BOARD OF INQUIRY -- CONFERENCE ROOM - DAY]
WARNER: Excuse me, Agent Foley. How long did you say you clung
to the underside of Angela Hamilton's car?
JAKE: I don't know ... I don't know. Two, two and a half hours.
WARNER: That's impressive.
(JENNINGS JENNINGS puts his hand over the microphone and leans close to JIM
SKERRIT.)
JENNINGS: (whispers) Can you imagine that power in the hands of a
properly-trained agent?
JAKE: (flatly) Yeah. Imagine that. (He points to his ears.) Nano hearing.
SKERRIT: Agent Foley ... just tell us what happened.
CUT TO:
[EXT. SANTA COSTA JUNGLE - ROADWAY - DAY - FLASHBACK]
(The jeep stops. ANGELA grabs her bag and gets out of the car. She walks over
to the back of the jeep and puts the tail gate down. She puts her bag on the
gate and opens it. Inside is her gun and the case with the varcon gas inside.)
(Just to be absolutely sure, she opens the case and shows it to us. Yep, all
three vials are there. She closes the case.)
(Behind her, a gun hammer clicks.)
(ANGELA turns around to find herself staring down the barrel of a gun held by
JAKE.)
ANGELA: How...?
JAKE: Shut up. Turn around. Put your hands on the car.
(ANGELA reaches for the case. JAKE stops her.)
JAKE: (shouts) Don't!
(JAKE reaches out and takes the bag from her.)
JAKE: You're the one who planted the fake vials. You came up to my room to see
if we bought it.
ANGELA: And you did.
(She turns around and starts walking toward JAKE.)
JAKE: Turn around!
ANGELA: You have a shoot-to-kill order, don't you?
JAKE: Take another step, you'll find out.
ANGELA: It's not so easy, is it? Putting a bullet in somebody you
know ... intimately.
JAKE: Why are you doing this? Why are you selling this stuff to the rebels?
ANGELA: I'm not. I'm selling it to the government. The U.S. won't
sell the varcon gas anymore. I will.
SKERRIT: (v.o.) All right. Hold it. Just hold it right there.
CUT TO:
END OF FLASHBACK
[INT. NSA - BOARD OF INQUIRY -- CONFERENCE ROOM - DAY]
SKERRIT: Now, you have been warned about mentioning the use, manufacture,
or sale of varcon gas in the United States.
WARNER: Agent Foley, I think what Mr. Skerritt is trying to say
is for a government employee to intimate that our government would do such a
thing is considered treason.
(JAKE sits forward in his seat.)
JAKE: I understand.
WARNER: Thank you, Agent Foley. Proceed with your story.
JAKE: Okay.
(He clears his throat.)
JAKE: The gas that the united states government would never manufacture -- the
same gas that the united states government would never dream of selling to a
client state - that exact same gas was used to kill Angela Hamilton's younger
sister. "Jessica had just graduated from Penn." ...
CUT TO:
[EXT. SANTA COSTA JUNGLE - ROADWAY - DAY - FLASHBACK]
ANGELA: ... She was a speech therapy major. She already had a job
lined up. She and her girlfriend were backpacking through Central America.
They stopped in Golfito, a little town on the coast here. Didn't realize it was
a rebel stronghold. One minute, they're having lunch and the next, the whole
village is being gassed. The U.S. never lifted a finger. Never went after the
guy who gave the order, nothing.
JAKE: Angela, whoever this guy is ...
ANGELA: I know exactly who he is -- Colonel Enrique Alonzo, head of
the Santa Costa revolutionary guard. It's army talk for death squad.
JAKE: But we can tell people. We can bring him in.
ANGELA: I gave them two and a half years to bring him in. When I knew
they never would, I left the agency.
JAKE: So, now you're selling varcon to the people who killed your sister. (He
looks at her.) No, you're not selling the gas to them. You're going to kill
Alonzo with it. I can't let you do that.
(The approaching vehicles get louder.)
ANGELA: I don't think you have a choice.
(JAKE turns around and sees the approaching vehicles.)
VOICE: (in Spanish) (translated) There she is!
JAKE: Oh, this is suicide. (realizes) But you already knew that.
ANGELA: (smiles at JAKE) Thank you for a perfect last night. You're
my partner. (The men climb out of the vehicle.) You helped me steal the vials.
When they take me inside the mobile lab, stay outside.
CUT TO:
[EXT. SANTA COSTA JUNGLE - ROADWAY - DAY - FLASHBACK]
(JAKE paces the grounds and glances at his watch as he passes by an armed
guard.)
(Inside the facility, the technician checks the vials. He removes the vials
from the testing tank and puts them in front of CAPTAIN GARCIA. He nods his
head. CAPTAIN GARCIA smiles.)
(Outside, JAKE listens in on the conversation.)
CUE SOUND: ENHANCED HEARING
(Inside, the transaction takes place.)
CAPTAIN GARCIA: Good. I just need the other two vials, and we have a deal.
ANGELA: No, we have a deal when I deliver the other two vials to
Colonel Alonzo.
CAPTAIN GARCIA: Colonel Alonzo has other matters to attend to.
ANGELA: Well, then we don't have a deal.
CAPTAIN GARCIA: I'm sorry, but in fact we do. (He turns the guard.)
(in Spanish): Muchacho. Llevela afuera y matela.
(translation): Take her outside and kill her.
(Cut back to: Outside, JAKE hears it.)
(He turns around and paces back in front of the armed guard. He knocks the
guard out.)
(JAKE heads for inside the facility.)
(Inside, the guard pushes ANGELA up against the wall. ANGELA fights back.)
(CAPTAIN GARCIA turns around to see JAKE kick the buyer across the testing tank,
shattering it.)
(The vial of varcon gas on the table hits the floor and smashes, releasing the
gas.)
(The guards start to yell and shout. JAKE knocks one of them out as he tries to
get out of the trailer. JAKE unhooks the only mask hanging on the wall and
tosses it to ANGELA.)
JAKE: Angela! Here!
(ANGELA puts the mask on. The GUARD on the floor is crawling toward the door,
wheezing and gasping for breath.)
(ANGELA heads out the door. JAKE grabs the guard, hits his head against the
ceiling and knocks him out. CAPTAIN GARCIA is bleeding on the floor, his eyes,
nose and mouth a bloody mess from the gas.)
(ANGELA helps JAKE out the door as he starts to cough and wheeze.)
(Both CAPTAIN GARCIA and the TECHNICIAN are bleeding to death from the gas.
Several gross scenes of them dying and of blood gurgling out of their mouths.)
(Cut to: Outside, JAKE is struggling from the affects of the gas. ANGELA
tosses her bag on the ground near his head. She kneels down next to him as he
wheezes from the pain. She grabs her bag and searches for a knife.)
ANGELA: I have to perform a tracheotomy. It means I'm going to open
your airway, okay? I've done this before. Don't worry, sweetheart.
(She pulls the knife back thoroughly prepared to perform the procedure.)
ANGELA: Don't move.
(JAKE stares at the knife as he takes gasping breaths of air.)
(Camera zooms in through JAKE and the nanites zap him with extra everything.)
(He takes a gasping breath of air.)
(ANGELA moves her hand. JAKE grabs her wrist and stops her. He shakes his
head.)
JAKE: (grunts) I'm better.
(ANGELA stares at him, stunned. JAKE takes great, gasping, heaving breaths of
air.)
(ANGELA is completely speechless. Camera holds on JAKE as he breathes easier.)
FADE OUT
(COMMERCIAL SET)
FADE IN.
[NSA SEAL]
[INT. NSA - BOARD OF INQUIRY -- CONFERENCE ROOM - DAY]
LOU: And along with the team at Sat Ops, I monitored the operation.
SKERRIT: And did you feel at any time that you lost control?
LOU: No. Field work is not an exact science. These operations take on a life
of their own once all of the different variables come into play.
JENNINGS: Agent Foley was a party to several murders of one of our allies
and this is what you call a variable?
(LOU looks at JAKE.)
LOU: Agent Foley was pressed into a difficult and ethically challenging
situation. Once we became aware of the deaths in Santa Costa, I dispatched
Agent Duarte to extract him and to finish the operation ...
CUT TO:
[EXT. SANTA COSTA JUNGLE - ROADWAY - DAY - FLASHBACK]
(Camera opens on the bodies of the soldiers on the ground as someone covers them
with a jacket.)
LOU: (v.o.) ... according to the orders given me by my superiors.
GUARD: (in Spanish) (translation) They're all dead. It was the American girl
and her friend.
(The COLONEL steps out of the facility.)
GUARD: (in Spanish) (translation) Don't get too close.
ALONZO: (in Spanish) (translation) Find them now!
(The GUARD nods his head.)
CUT TO:
[EXT./INT. SANTA COSTA - VEHICLE (MOVING0 - DAY - FLASHBACK - CONTINUOUS]
(She turns back onto the road.)
ANGELA: (v.o.) What the hell are you?
(JAKE takes several deep breaths.)
JAKE: I told you. I'm an agent with the NSA.
ANGELA: I didn't ask who. I asked what. You survived exposure to
varcon gas. Nobody does that.
(JAKE looks at ANGELA.)
JAKE: Give me the other two vials.
ANGELA: I'm not done with them. Alonzo isn't not dead yet.
JAKE: Angela.
ANGELA: No.
JAKE: All right. I work with a Special Ops team at the NSA. A team that will
do anything for me, including bringing this Alonzo guy in.
ANGELA: Jake, you say that, but I know how these agencies work.
JAKE: Well, that's not how I work. And that's not how my superiors work. You
have my word. Angela, if you try doing this on your own, this guy's going to
vanish, and then he will get away with murder.
(JAKE looks around and notices the silver charm bracelet on ANGELA'S wrist.)
JAKE: Was that your sister's?
ANGELA: Yeah. You know what the hardest thing is? Watching the news.
Jessie used to yell at the broadcasters, not about the news, but about the way
they talked. She was a speech therapist, you know? "That guy's hiding a
stutter." "I could cure his cul-de-sac resonance in a day." "Talk about
disfluency."
(She smiles wistfully at the memory. Then sniffs.)
(JAKE remains thoughtful.)
(Just then, they approach a roadblock. JAKE glances at ANGELA.)
(ANGELA stops the car.)
(The men holding the guns on them, motion for them to get out of the car.)
[EXT. SANTA COSTA JUNGLE - ROADWAY - DAY - FLASHBACK]
(JAKE steps out of the car.)
JAKE: How are you today?
ALONZO: Hands in the air.
(JAKE puts his hands in the air. In each hand, he has the vials of varcon gas.)
GUARDS: (in Spanish) (translated) He's got the Varcon.
(The COLONEL takes out a handgun and points it at JAKE.)
JAKE: You shoot me, you'll be dead in ten seconds.
ALONZO: He's bluffing.
ANGELA: No, he's not.
(ANGELA closes the door and keeps her gun on the COLONEL. The GUARDS around the
COLONEL all take their guns off and put them on the ground.)
ANGELA: Do you know who I am?
ALONZO: No.
ANGELA: I'm a nurse in Zancuta going home to cook dinner for her two
children.
(She moves in close and rests the end of the gun barrel against his chest.)
ANGELA: I'm a 12-year-old boy on his way to soccer practice. I'm a
22-year-old American girl from Philadelphia with her whole life ahead of her.
ALONZO: I am not afraid to die.
ANGELA: We'll see about that.
(JAKE watches ANGELA. The COLONEL swallows.)
(ANGELA squeezes the trigger.)
(The gun clicks. It's empty.)
(ANGELA stares down at the gun completely surprised to find it empty.)
(Just then, vehicles arrive.)
KYLE: Jake!
(KYLE rushes out from the vehicle.)
JAKE: Okay, it's okay.
(He stops near ANGELA HAMILTON.)
KYLE: Angela Hamilton?
ANGELA: Yes?
(He takes the gun from her. The OFFICERS put her in cuffs. JAKE puts the vials
in a metal case.)
(KYLE turns to talk with the COLONEL as they lead ANGELA to the truck. JAKE
watches, perplexed.)
JAKE: Kyle?
(KYLE speaks with the COLONEL.)
(JAKE tries to talk with the OFFICERS handcuffing ANGELA.)
JAKE: It's okay guys. It's not necessary.
(They push him aside. JAKE turns to KYLE who is deep in conversation with the
COLONEL.)
JAKE: Kyle.
(The COLONEL talks to KYLE, turns and points to JAKE and ANGELA. Both ANGELA
and JAKE see the move. JAKE doesn't like it. ANGELA already knows how this is
going to end up.)
(KYLE sighs and looks at the OFFICERS. He motions to them to bring ANGELA over
to the COLONEL.)
JAKE: What's going on?
(The OFFICERS lead ANGELA to the COLONEL.)
JAKE: (getting angry) Kyle? Kyle, what's going on?
(They put ANGELA in the back of the COLONEL'S truck. JAKE really starts to
protest. KYLE tries to explain it to JAKE.)
JAKE: No, I told her we could help her.
KYLE: Jake, Jake, listen to me. It's their country, okay? Lou had to pull
strings just to get you out alive.
JAKE: No, no, she trusted me, damn it!
KYLE: Jake, listen to me. It's out of our hands. I'm sorry.
(JAKE watches as the COLONEL drives off with ANGELA in the back of his jeep.
She looks back at JAKE. Their eyes meet as they drive off.)
KYLE: (v.o.) I was ordered ...
CUT TO:
[INT. NSA - BOARD OF INQUIRY -- CONFERENCE ROOM - DAY]
KYLE: (angrily) ... to hand Angela Hamilton over to a government with an
abominable human rights record. Right now, she's rotting in one of their
prisons, while the country she once served ignores the fact she's even alive.
JENNINGS: Sit down, Agent Duarte. Barring any further questions from my
colleagues, I think we're done here.
WARNER: We will review the evidence and return our evaluation of
your unit as soon as possible.
SKERRIT: Until then, you'll be restricted to desk work and your movements
will be carefully monitored.
(JAKE looks at LOU. She shakes her head.)
SKERRIT: I'm sure you all understand.
JAKE: No, I don't ... and I need to say something.
(JAKE stands up.)
JENNINGS: (interrupts) You've said enough.
JAKE: (angry) No, I haven't! This isn't about our field performance. This is
about you finding a scapegoat.
SKERRIT: You're out of line, son.
JAKE: Because I'm not afraid of the truth? That we helped kill American
citizens, that we abandoned Angela Hamilton, that we sold Varcon to Santa Costa,
and you hypocrites can't even bring yourself to say the word?
JENNINGS: Guards, escort Mr. Foley to a cell.
(The GUARDS step forward.)
(JAKE concentrates.)
CUE SOUND: INTERFACING
(Camera zooms in to the stenographer's recording of the proceedings, then zooms
back out.)
(All the monitors in the room change and show the complete transcript on
screen.)
WARNER: What's ... what's happening?
(The monitors show the transcript being uploaded to the server.)
(cc) JENNINGS: Our transcript is being uploaded.
JENNINGS: What's he doing?
(Several active windows pop up as files and directories are rapidly created.
Finally, the screen movements stop on the SEND button flashing on screen. The
NSA DIRECTOR turns and looks at JAKE. She knows exactly what he's doing. He's
taking control.)
(LOU watches the DIRECTORS squirm in their seats, a shift in power occurring as
they watch.)
JAKE: Tell them to stand down.
(JAMES SKERRIT motions for the GUARDS to stand down. The GUARDS lower their
weapons and step aside.)
JAKE: The transcripts for this hearing are now in the server.
(On screen, the message box reads: READY TO SEND ALL ATTACHMENTS?)
JAKE: (coldly) If I blink, everything that's been said here today will be e-
mailed to the AP wire. All of your dealings with the repressive government of
Santa Costa, turning over Angela ... every paper in the country'll have their
hands on it. Now, you want to shut us down, send me off to be a lab rat the
rest of my life, be my guest ... but Angela is walking out of that prison ... or
else.
LOU: Chief Skerrit, ...
(LOU stands up.)
LOU: ... members of the board ... this might be an excellent time for you to
reevaluate your perception of my team.
(JENNINGS slowly gets to his feet, not liking this threat at all.)
JENNINGS: If you think we are going to allow ourselves to be blackmailed
by you ...
WARNER: (interrupting) Sit down, Miles.
(JENNINGS glances at the NSA DIRECTOR, then grudgingly sits down.)
WARNER: We see your point. In light of your passionate testimony
today ...
(She looks at all four members of the team, now on their feet facing the Board
of Inquiry.)
WARNER: I think we shouldn't rush to judge.
SKERRIT: This is an unorthodox unit. It cannot be measured by
traditional notions of intelligence work ... for the record.
LOU: This meeting is closed, then?
JENNINGS: (sighs, disgusted) Yes. It's closed.
(JAKE relaxes. One by one, they file out of the room.)
CUT TO:
[INT. NSA - HALLWAY - DAY]
(They walk down the hallway.)
DIANE: Okay, so-so we're free?
LOU: For the time being, yeah.
DIANE: I need some tea or something stronger. Are we allowed to drink on duty?
LOU: No, but we're going to start.
KYLE: Were you really going to send that transcript out?
JAKE: Sure, if the e-mail I made up actually belonged to anybody.
(KYLE chuckles.)
LOU: (smiles) Good work.
(DIANE laughs.)
CUT TO:
[INT. NSA - BOARD OF INQUIRY -- CONFERENCE ROOM - DAY]
WARNER: (to the stenographer and the guards) Leave us.
(The stenographer leaves as do the guards.)
JENNINGS: (disgusted) Spineless.
WARNER: Excuse me?
JENNINGS: No, I don't. Letting them off was inexcusable. I mean, what
does that say about us?
WARNER: It says we handled the situation ineptly. And, Miles, if
you ever speak to me in that tone of voice again, I'll cut your tongue out. I'm
not being figurative. Jim ... Louise Beckett is in many ways an admirable
woman. You promoted her. If she fails, so will you.
SKERRIT: Duly noted.
WARNER: Jake Foley is another matter. Did you see the way he
stood up to us? That's a soldier.
(SKERRIT glances at the WOMAN DIRECTOR.)
SKERRIT: You like him?
WARNER: Oh, my God, I hate and fear him, but a man like that bent
to your will could accomplish anything.
SKERRIT: I don't believe he's bent to anyone's will.
WARNER: No, that's the problem. One I intend to rectify.
(WARNER stands up and leaves.)
CUT TO:
[INT. NSA - HALLWAY - DAY]
(Camera holds on the JAKE and the rest of the team turning the corner and
walking down the corridor.)
[INT. WAREHOUSE - DAY]
(JAKE stands at the head of a couple of AGENTS. Waiting.)
(In front of him, a vehicle turns in and stops a distance away. The doors open
and ANGELA HAMILTON gets out of the back seat of the car. She walks toward
JAKE.)
(JAKE starts to walk toward her.)
(They stop in front of each other.)
(JAKE takes the blanket under his arm and wraps it around her. With his arm
around her, they walk toward his waiting car.)
ANGELA: (softly) Thanks.
JAKE: (quietly) You all right?
ANGELA: I am now.
(They walk out of camera frame.)
FADE TO WHITE.
