COLD OPEN:

[VARIOUS CLIPS OF PAST EPISODES]

NARRATOR (MAN): (v.o.) Jake Foley was an ordinary guy until a freak accident transformed him into the world's first computer-enhanced man. Millions of microscopic computers interface with his biochemistry. They give him the power to control technology with his brain. He is the ultimate human upgrade.

FADE OUT.

FADE IN.

[EXT. SUBWAY TRAIN (STOCK) - NIGHT]

[EXT. WASHINGTON D.C. (STOCK) - MORNING]

[EXT. NSA BUILDING (STOCK) - DAY]

[INT. NSA - DIANE'S LAB -- DAY]

(Diane is hunched over the counter leaning toward the espresso machine, her cheek resting on the palm of her hand, her elbow resting on the counter. She presses the button. It beeps. Nothing happens.)

(She sighs heavily.)

(Jake walks into the lab. She gets up when she realizes it's him. There's an awkwardness around them both, moreso around Diane.)

DIANE: Hey.

JAKE: Hey.

(Jake stares at the espresso machine. He tilts his head because seeing it in her office just doesn't make sense.)

JAKE: Did you know there's a brand new coffee shop just down the street?

DIANE: (chuckles) Yeah. And pay three bucks for an espresso when I can have a fresh one - right here - forget it.

(Diane presses the button on the machine. It beeps. Nothing happens.)

(Jake watches her.)

(Diane knows Jake's watching her. She reaches out and presses the button on the machine again. It beeps. And again, nothing happens.)

DIANE: Where exactly is this new place?

(Jake laughs.)

JAKE: Let me take a look at this thing.

(Diane sighs with relief.)

JAKE: Hey, first of all, have you even bothered looking at the manual? (beat) I didn't think so.

DIANE: Hmmm. (She grabs the two-inch thick manual and tosses it toward him.) Go for it, Mr. Science.

(Jake picks it up and flips through it.)

JAKE: What? All this for that?

DIANE: (smugly) Yeah.

JAKE: That's ridiculous.

(Jake tosses the manual on the counter and stares at the espresso machine.)

(Camera zooms into the machine and Jake makes a connection with the mechanism inside. It clicks.)

(Camera pulls out to show us to espresso display: DOUBLE SHOT. The machine starts working.)

JAKE: There you go.

(Diane smiles. Jake hands her a cup.)

DIANE: Thank you.

JAKE: You're welcome.

(Jake takes the other cup.)

DIANE: Do you want some sugar?

JAKE: No. No, thank you.

(Diane fills her cup with sugar.)

JAKE: So. Uh ... been ... busy ... ?

DIANE: (nods) Yeah. Yeah. Yourself?

JAKE: Yeah. You know ... Same old ... ran away ... had a shoot to kill order on me, almost slept with my best ... colleague ... Had a nice Ethiopian meal.

DIANE: Well, you have been busy.

(Diane takes her cup into the next room. Jake follows her.)

JAKE: Yeah. Uh, uh, you did hear the part about almost sleeping with you ...

DIANE: Yeah, yeah. Hmm ...

JAKE: Because, we haven't really talked about it.

DIANE: No. ... You were not yourself ... and I was ... I mean, not really, but anyhow, we don't need to be awkward now because we talked about it.

JAKE: Right. Okay. Uh ... but, what do Lou and Kyle think?

DIANE: Y-y-you didn't tell them -

JAKE: No, no, no. Not about that. Uh, about ... well, about me coming back.

(Diane sighs.)

DIANE: They're happy. They're happy you're back. Why? Did you hear something?

JAKE: No, nothing. I'm kinda waiting for the other shoe to drop.

(Diane chuckles nervously.)

JAKE: You know, I caused a lot of trouble for the agency -

DIANE: Jake. You lost your memory. Okay? They know that it was not your fault. Besides, you're the only nano-enhanced agent in theses parts, so - makes you pretty much irreplaceable.

(Jake smiles, relieved.)

CUT TO:

[INT. NSA - SAT OPS -- DAY]

(Lou and Kyle meet with Executive Director Valerie Warner.)

LOU: Well, whatever you think, he is without a doubt, one of the finest agents we have.

VALERIE WARNER: That's your judgement. My concerns are efficacy in the field and ability to follow orders.

KYLE: Guy's a natural. Nobody else comes close.

CUE SOUND: ENHANCED ABILITY

(Camera zooms down from the second floor where they are and out the Sat Ops doors, into the hallways to where Jake is standing, listening in on their conversation.)

LOU: (eavesdropping) Infiltration. Recon. Hand-to-hand. You name it. He can handle it.

KYLE: (eavesdropping) Not to mention what he can do technically, electronically.

(Jake smiles a bit and heads into the Sat Ops room. He's still listening in on their conversation.)

LOU: Thinks on his feet, great judgment, never panics.

(Jake casually walks into the room.)

KYLE: When in the field, he's the man I want by my side.

(Lou looks up.)

LOU: There he is.

(Jake casually waves.)

KYLE: Ben.

(Ben Wilton walks out of the hallway into Sat Ops. Kyle makes the introductions.)

KYLE: This is Director Warner.

BEN WILTON: Nice to meet you, Director.

(Jake looks around and steps away.)

VALERIE WARNER: These two seem pretty determined to get you on their team.

BEN WILTON: It'd be an honor. Do you have any questions for me?

VALERIE WARNER: Just one. Are you prepared for the responsibilities and risks that you are about to undertake?

BEN WILTON: Yes ma'am. I believe that I am.

VALERIE WARNER: Agent Foley's enhancement was an accident. He was neither trained nor prepared for it. You will be. Even so, once we give you the nanites, no one knows for certain how they'll react to your body chemistry.

BEN WILTON: Well, I understand, Director. My health is secondary. Moving this technology forward is primary. We're at war all over the globe. Any edge we can have over our enemy is one that we need to develop and keep.

(Impressed, Valerie Warner nods.)

VALERIE WARNER: Done.

(She turns and leaves.)

(Jake turns around and finds another agent looking at him.)

CUT TO:

[EXT. BUILDING - DAY]

LEGEND: MITROVICA, SERBIA

(It's snowing outside. A truck pulls up. In the back are a group of people with bags over their heads. They're bound.)

(One of the men manages to get the bag off his head. He jumps out the back of the truck trying to get away. Immediately, the guards realize that he's running and exit the car with their guns in their hands.)

GUARDS: Don't! Don't!

(They shout at him to stop.)

(Alex Brandt stops and falls to his knees in the center of the snow-covered road. He looks up at the sky.)

ALEX BRANDT: (whispers) Help me.

(The guard hits Alex Brandt on the back of the head with the butt of his rifle.)

(Camera zooms backward up into the sky. ... )

(... And out through the atmosphere into orbit ... )

[EXT. EARTH'S ORBIT]

(... where a satellite crosses the camera frame, its telemetry beeping.)

FADE IN.

[EXT. NSA BUILDING (STOCK) - DAY]

[INT. NSA SAT OPS TO HALLWAY -- DAY]

(Jake walks up to Lou and Kyle.)

JAKE: Well, this is exciting. It's not every day our little team gets a new member. Were we going to tell me or were you just going to wait till I pick up my coffee cup one day and says "Property of Ben-whatever his name" is.

KYLE: His name is Wilton. He's a very competent agent.

JAKE: Good. I wouldn't want to be replaced by an incompetent one.

LOU: You're not being replaced. And we were going to tell you, but you jumped the gun by spying on us.

(Lou turns and walks out of Sat Ops.)

JAKE: I wasn't spying. I was eavesdropping which is a totally different - Look, I know that things have been a little crazy, but why would you bring somebody else in?

LOU: Why do you think?

JAKE: I'm not a very good agent?

LOU: No, of course not. I was ordered to.

JAKE: Oh. That was my second guess.

LOU: What we fought for and what we got was an agent of our own choosing - one that we know and one that we trust.

KYLE: Jake, there's no timetable for Ben getting the nanites. Could be in a few months, could be never. For the time being, he's just going to work with us and get to know you.

JAKE: Well, if we don't have any choice, but what are you two going to tell Diane, because she is not going to be happy about this.

CUE SOUND: Diane laughing.

(Everyone stops and turns around. Diane and Ben Wilton turn the corner and head toward them.)

DIANE: Okay. Okay, you win, Ben, but only if you count ions and your carbons bounce.

BEN WILTON: I always do.

DIANE: Oh.

(Ben introduces himself.)

BEN WILTON: Hey, Jake. Ben Wilton. Nice to finally meet you.

JAKE: Hi.

BEN WILTON: So, I guess they told you?

JAKE: Yeah. Well, I kinda heard it through the grapevine.

BEN WILTON: Well, listen. I just want you to know right out of the gate, you are Alan Shepherd.

JAKE: (confused) The astronaut?

BEN WILTON: The first American astronaut to orbit the earth. And if I am fortunate enough to follow in your shoes, it will always be just that. Following in your shoes.

JAKE: Oh, well, I guess that true.

LOU: Okay, let's head into my office so I can get Ben up to speed.

(Lou, Kyle and Ben turn and head into Lou's office.)

DIANE: It's good to meet you Ben.

BEN WILTON: Yeah, you too, Diane.

JAKE: I'll be right there.

(Jake turns and goes into the bathroom first.)

FADE OUT.

FADE IN.

[INT. NSA - MEN'S BATHROOM -- DAY]

(Jake is using the bathroom when Diane walks in. She stops behind him. He turns his head around, surprised to find her there.)

JAKE: Diane? Men's room. What are you doing?

(She motions for him to hurry up and finish.)

DIANE: We have to talk.

(Diane leans up against the stall as Jake finishes.)

JAKE: Okay. Okay.

(Jake finishes and goes to the sink to wash his hands.)

JAKE: (rushes) Okay. Look. I've been thinking about this a lot and that kiss was - (Diane's eyes widen as Jake continues.) -- well, I know things were crazy, but I meant it. You're beautiful. But I keep coming back to the fact that we work together and it's the NSA and I think that we both understand that we just can't.

(Diane remains quiet.)

JAKE: Uh, what?

DIANE: Oh. I didn't come into the bathroom to talk about that.

JAKE: Oh.

(Diane walks over to the sink and washes her hands.)

JAKE: Then ... what did you ... ?

DIANE: It's just that I think that, uh, you need to do something about the new guy.

JAKE: Ben?

DIANE: Yes.

JAKE: Ben. Super agent? His own video? I thought you liked him.

DIANE: Yes, I do. Who wouldn't? I mean, he's fantastic. He's brilliant and he's a soldier. And that's why you have to prove that you are better than he is, Jake. You have cutting edge technology inside you, but you are only valuable as long as you stay ahead of the competition. If they decide to upgrade someone like Ben, then you are obsolete. Overnight.

(Jake looks away as he's never considered that possibility.)

DIANE: (whispers) You really think I'm beautiful?

JAKE: Uh --

(The door opens and Kyle walks in. He's surprised to find Diane there.)

KYLE: Have we gone unisex?

(Diane turns and leaves.)

KYLE: We've got something on Sat Ops. Now, Jake ...

(Jake turns to leave; Kyle looks down to point out something Jake's forgotten.)

(Jake looks down, gives an embarrassed smile and fixes the problem. He heads out.)

CUT TO:

[INT. NSA - SAT OPS -- DAY]

(On the wall monitor, various visuals of the moving satellite video of the snowy town are shown.)

TECH AGENT SUSAN CARVER: These were taken about two hours ago from Mitrovica. It's a small town about a hundred miles east of Belgrade - under Serb control.

(Jake walks in and joins the group.)

JAKE: They're still holding POW's? I though the Serbs lost the war.

BEN WILTON: They did. A couple of Militia groups still hold control of the countryside. Which one of our birds took these?

TECH AGENT SUSAN CARVER: Orion two?

BEN WILTON: What's NRO? What do you think, Jake?

JAKE: (flustered) I think that - it's NRO.

BEN WILTON: That's right. It's key-oh satellite. We should be able to get a better picture. Try tapping into their database.

(Susan Carver gets better photos. The prisoner is on his knees on the show and looking up at the sky.)

JAKE: Looks like he's praying.

KYLE: He's telling us that he's alive. Our satellites monitor prison camps all over the world. Every American POW knows to try and show his face whenever he can.

(Susan finds a picture clear photo of the prisoner's. They recognize him immediately.)

KYLE: That's Alex Brandt.

BEN WILTON: I thought he was killed in action.

LOU: I did too. Notify our people in Belgrade. I want rescue scenarios in the next hour.

KYLE: You want me to notify Alex's wife?

LOU: No. I'll do it.

(Lou turns and walks out of Sat Ops.)

[INT. NSA - HALLWAY - DAY -- CONTINUOUS]

(Lou walks through the hallway and remembers.)

FADE TO WHITE:

[EXT. TOWN - DAY - FLASHBACK]

LEGEND: BELGRADE, SERBIA 1998

(The soldiers are under gunfire. Camera pans around the area and we see the Radio man on the radio.)

RADIO MAN: Give me radar. We are under heavy fire. Requesting immediate evac.

(Camera moves around and we see Lou in the doorway of an old building. Alex Brandt is just outside the door behind some cover. Lou runs for the nearest cover and checks on the two soldiers there. A gunman steps out and fires at her.)

(She turns and heads for Alex Brandt to check on him.)

ALEX BRANDT: There was an ambush. Meyers is dead.

LOU: What about Hernandez and Miller?

ALEX BRANDT: They're still inside.

(The gunfire is still engaged in front of them.)

SOLDIER'S VOICE: I don't believe this.

LOU: (to radio) This is Marker 1. We still need extraction. Now. (Alex grabs his gun and stands up, and heads for the cover.) Alex, they're on their way! Alex!

(Alex turns around knowing full well Lou is there.)

ALEX BRANDT: I can't hear you, Bullet.

(Alex Brant deliberately runs into the building.)

LOU: (to radio) Where's my transport!

(Just then, the building explodes catching everyone off guard.)

(The soldier near the stack of crates pulls his wounded friend back near Lou.)

SOLDIER: He's hurt bad. We've got to get him out of here.

LOU: Did you see Alex?

SOLDIER: They took him down.

LOU: Is he dead?

SOLDIER: They got him from all sides. He wasn't moving.

(The Transport pulls up. A Gunman fires point blank at a soldier in the back.)

(Lou wants confirmation.)

LOU: Is he dead?

(Soldier 2 runs out from the transport to help Soldier 1.)

SOLDIER 2: I've got three criticals here, let's move out.

LOU: Wait! Hold on!

(Lou turns to look at the building. It explodes again, a smaller explosion.)

LOU: Are you sure he wasn't moving?

SOLDIER: He wasn't.

(Another part of the building explodes.)

SOLDIER 2: They're bleeding out.

(Lou makes a hard decision.)

LOU: Let's go. Let's go! Go! We're going!

(Lou scrambles to her feet to get her men out of there.)

FADE TO WHITE END OF FLASHBACK SEQUENCE

[INT. NSA - LOU'S OFFICE - DAY -- PRESENT]

(Lou is looking through a file folder for Alex Brandt. There's a knock at the door.)

LOU: Come in.

(Kyle walks into the office. He closes the door behind him.)

KYLE: Everyone thought he was dead, Lou.

LOU: Yeah.

KYLE: The Board of Inquiry said you acted reasonably and courageously.

LOU: Yes, well, I'm not so sure about the courageous part.

KYLE: Those other men are alive because of you.

(Lou takes a moment and looks at Kyle.)

KYLE: Alex's wife is here.

LOU: Show her in.

(Jennifer Brandt walks into the office.)

JENNIFER BRANDT: Hello, Louise.

LOU: Jennifer.

JENNIFER BRANDT: Is it true?

LOU: Yes, they picked him up on satellite yesterday.

JENNIFER BRANDT: He's alive?

LOU: He is alive. Yes. But ...

JENNIFER BRANDT: But what?

LOU: Generoff is a notorious prison camp. At best, he'll be malnourished and disoriented.

JENNIFER BRANDT: And at worst?

LOU: He will have been beaten and tortured for the last five years.

JENNIFER BRANDT: What does the NSA intend to do about this?

LOU: We're mounting a rescue.

JENNIFER BRANDT: When?

LOU: Immediately.

JENNIFER BRANDT: (nods) Okay. Who's leading the operation?

LOU: I am.

JENNIFER BRANDT: But you were the one who left him out there.

LOU: I know. And I'm the one who's going to get him back.

(The two women look at each other.)

CUT TO:

[INT. NSA - SAT OPS -- DAY]

(The group meets to go over the strategy to rescue the prisoner.)

BEN WILTON: Mitrovica Prison Camp is low tech. It's barbed wire. Guards with Kalijnikovs. A commando team with BlackHawks will infiltrate the southern perimeter. Repel to center court.

LOU: They have a stamp site in center court. They'll blow us right out of the sky.

KYLE: Alex is a tech warfare specialist. He can wire any munitions in the book. We smuggle in the device to him, he blows the eastern wall, we have our men waiting outside in the woods.

LOU: No, we don't know what kind of shape Alex is in. I don't want to risk losing anymore men if we have to. I want a scalpel here people, not a baseball bat.

JAKE: (sighs) Aw, jeez. How hard can it be to break into a Serbian prison? (Everyone looks at him.) Sorry.

BEN WILTON: No. That's brilliant. We leak a fake communiqué. We tell them there's an American agent coming. Alert the local police. Jake will be in that prison the moment he crosses city limit.

JAKE: He is?

BEN WILTON: Sure. With your strength and your speed? You can open the main doors in the main courtyard.

JAKE: Yeah, I can get him out of there through one of these tunnels here.

LOU: I like it.

BEN WILTON: And when you get to that tunnel, I'll be there to take you home.

CUT TO:

[EXT. MITROVICA PRISON CAMP -- DAY]

LEGEND: MITROVICA, SERBIA

(Above ground, prison camp life continues as usual.)

(Camera moves down below the ground and into the tunnels.)

[INT. MITROVICA PRISON CAMP - TUNNELS - DAY -- CONTINUOUS]

(Jake is half-carrying, half-dragging Alex Brandt through the underground tunnels.)

JAKE: Come on, Alex. Keep moving. We're almost there.

(Behind him, he hears a guard shout. Jake turns around and fires a couple of shots. The guard goes down.)

(Ben meets up with them.)

BEN WILTON: You take him to the truck, I'll hold them off.

(Jake hands Alex over to Ben.)

JAKE: No, you take him. I'll cover you.

BEN WILTON: Alex, come on.

(Ben leads Alex away. Jake turns around and heads back into the tunnels.)

BEN WILTON: Hurry!

(Ben Winton helps Alex to the trucks parked outside the tunnels.)

BEN WILTON: All right! Start her up! Get in the truck.

(Inside the tunnel, Jake hides in a dark spot.)

CUE SOUND: ENHANCED ABILITIES

(Jake's eyes glow as his infra-vision kicks in.)

[JAKE'S POV]

(Through his enhanced vision, the tunnel is cast in green. At the very far end of the tunnels, Guards approach.)

(Jake swings down from the ceiling and knocks the guards out. He fights them and knocks them out.)

(A grenade hits the floor.)

(Jake sees it.)

JAKE: No!

(He turns and runs for all he's worth out of the tunnel.)

(The grenade explodes.)

(Jake continues to run, but he's not fast enough. He glances behind him as the flames start to make its way through the small confined area.)

(The flames engulf Jake completely.)

FADE OUT.

FADE IN.

[JAKE'S POV]

(Someone is putting an oxygen mask on him. His vision is blurred, but he can hear the voices around him.)

MALE VOICE: I can't believe you didn't --

DISSOLVE TO:

(Jake breathes heavily. He's on a gurney and is being transported through the hallways. Ben Wilton runs alongside the gurney. He looks down at Jake.)

BEN WILTON: Stay with me.

(Jake sees the ADMITTING sign hanging from the ceiling.)

BEN WILTON: We're gonna get you out of here.

VOICES: I need morphine, A.S.A.P.

(The double doors open and they head for the EMERGENCY ROOM.)

VOICES: An open line.

FADE OUT/ FADE IN.

(Ben continues to run along side the gurney.)

BEN WILTON: I've got a C130, we've got to pull one out.

FADE TO WHITE:

DIANE: (v.o.) Jake?

FADE IN.

(Diane is looking down at Jake.)

DIANE: Jake, you're going to be okay. You're home now.

FADE OUT.

FADE IN.

[INT. NSA - HALLWAY DOOR]

(The Retina Security Scanner pops out from the Security pad. Kyle leans forward and allows the Scanner's green light to scan him.)

(The visual monitor next to the scanner turns on and a close-up grid of Kyle's eye appears. The scan is run through the database and allows him in. ACCESS GRANTED.)

(Kyle pulls back from the scanner.)

CUT TO:

[INT. NSA - HALLWAY TO ALEX'S ROOM - DAY]

(Lou and Kyle head for the room where Jennifer and Alex Brandt are.)

LOU: The blast shook him up. Doctor said that his ears will be ringing for the next couple days. But, uh, he's in better shape than we expected.

JENNIFER BRANDT: Alex. Alex, it's me. It's me.

(Alex turns and sees Lou standing next to the bed. Jennifer smiles.)

ALEX BRANDT: Lou.

(He closes his eyes.)

JENNIFER BRANDT: Alex.

LOU: I'll leave you two alone.

JENNIFER BRANDT: The man who saved Alex, how is he?

(Lou and Kyle look at each other.)

CUT TO:

[INT. NSA - RECOVERY ROOM - DAY]

(Diane along with top burn specialists are in the room with Jake who is suspended in a case of blue liquid to treat the burns he sustained to his body.)

DR. VIKRAM TALEEK: I want an alograph for the dorsal, zenograph, right thighs and hips, please.

DIANE: You need to give the nanites time to heal him.

DR. VIKRAM TALEEK: They had twenty-four hours.

DIANE: I'm asking for another twenty-four.

DR. VIKRAM TALEEK: I'm sorry, it's too risky.

DIANE: Their heal rate is ten times faster than poly three.

DR. VIKRAM TALEEK: I'm not seeing it.

DIANE: Well, that's because you've been mega-dosing him on opiates. I think that it's inhibiting his neural-interface capacity. I-I-I'm just saying that he can heal himself if you'll just let him.

DR. VIKRAM TALEEK: He has third-degree burns over fifty percent of his body. If I take him off the morphine now, the shock alone could kill him.

DIANE: I disagree ...

DR. VIKRAM TALEEK: (firmly) Dr. Hughes. You have your specialty, I have mine. How about you let me practice it.

(Diane takes a breath and nods. Lou and Kyle walk into the room.)

(They walk up to the tank - to Jake who doesn't look good. Diane sighs heavily.)

KYLE: How's he doing?

DIANE: Not good.

KYLE: Is he going to be able to breathe on his own?

DIANE: (sighs) I don't know. He's just not healing.

(Diane turns and leaves the room.)

LOU: All I wanted was to bring Alex home safely without losing anyone. Instead, I may have lost them both.

(Lou turns and leaves the room.)

CUT TO:

[INT. NSA -- HALLWAY TO ALEX'S ROOM -- DAY]

(Lou steps out into the hallway and turns the corner. She walks over to Alex Brandt's room and stops in the doorway. Inside the room, Jennifer is sitting on the bed and leaning in close to Alex to hear what he's saying.)

JENNIFER BRANDT: (whispers) What? I didn't understand what you're saying.

(She stops and turns around. She sees Lou in the doorway. Lou turns and leaves.)

(Jennifer turns back to her husband.)

JENNIFER BRANDT: It's going to be all right.

CUT TO:

[INT. NSA - DIANE'S LAB - DAY]

(Diane is working when Ben Wilton walks into the lab.

DIANE: Hey.

BEN WILTON: I'm so sorry. If it's any consolation, what he did was truly heroic.

DIANE: I would prefer truly alive.

BEN WILTON: I know you two were ... are close. And I know that there is not a lot I can say, but I just figured, the very least, you could use the company.

DIANE: I appreciate that, but I'm all up to my elbows in morphine. Don't worry, it's not for me. I'm just working on some theories about Jake's pain management. So, anyhow ...

BEN WILTON: I'll let you get to it.

(Ben turns to leave Diane alone.)

DIANE: I mean, he's only been an agent for six months. (He stops and listens.) He still gets his badge tangled on things. (She chuckles.)

(He chuckles, too.)

(Diane sighs and takes her glasses off to rub her tired eyes.)

[SECURITY CAMERA]

(The Security Camera in the corner focuses in on Ben Wilton. We hear background noise of sounds as if under water.)

(We see Ben Wilton put a comforting arm around Diane's shoulders.)

DIANE: Thanks.

(Ben turns and leaves the lab.)

[RESUME VIEW]

(Diane sighs heavily. She picks up her microscope slide off the counter.)

(She drops the slide and it shatters on the floor.)

(Diane sighs with disgust. She kneels down and picks up the broken glass pieces. A tad careless in the task, she accidentally cuts herself. Her finger bleeds. She shoves her bleeding finger into her mouth.)

DIANE: Ow, damn it.

[SECURITY CAMERA POV]

DIANE: I'm such an idiot.

(Diane moves off to the side. The Security Camera zooms in on the espresso machine maker.)

[RESUME VIEW]

(The espresso machine turns on. It beeps.)

(Diane turns around and walks over to the machine. The label reads: DOUBLE SHOT.)

(Diane puts her glasses on.)

(The machine suddenly turns on and whirls. Diane jumps back.)

(The two cups fill with coffee.

[SECURITY CAMERA POV]

(Diane leans in close, confused by what she's just seen.)

FADE TO:

[INT. NSA - RECOVERY ROOM - DAY]

(Jake is in the liquid tank. His eyes are closed.)

[RETINA SCANNER]

(The green light goes on. The scanner beeps and chirps.)

[DIANE'S LEFT EYE]

(Her eye is being scanned. ACCESS GRANTED.)

(Diane walks into the secured area.)

[INT. NSA - RECOVERY ROOM - DAY]

(Open on the heart monitor. Jake is in the liquid tank. His eyes are closed. Diane walks into the room.)

(She walks around the tank and leans over the cover. She smiles at Jake.)

(She leans forward toward the tank.)

DIANE: (whispers) Did you just make me a cup of coffee?

(There's no response. Diane turns to look at the heart monitor. She turns back to look at Jake.)

(She doesn't see Jake's image on the heart monitor.)

(Camera zooms in on Jake's image.)

DIANE: (mutters) Okay. I'm officially crazy. I'm going to just go and try not to be crazy any more.

(Diane turns and heads for the door.)

(The door locks.)

(She grabs the door handle and tugs, but the door doesn't budge. She's locked in.)

(She looks back at Jake wondering if he's doing this.)

(Diane's phone rings. She digs into her coat pocket to get it. She flips it on and answers it.)

DIANE: Hello.

(The phone lefts out a loud, high, sustained pitch. It screeches in her ear.)

DIANE: Ow!

(Diane drops the phone. She picks it up and looks at the phone display. It reads: ZT408-90.)

(Diane looks at Jake.)

(The door unlocks automatically, allowing her to leave. Diane looks back at Jake as she reaches for the handle and cautiously steps out of the room.)

FADE OUT.

FADE IN.

[INT. NSA - LOU'S OFFICE - DAY]]

(Lou is in her office when Jennifer Brandt walks in.)

JENNIFER BRANDT: He's not getting any better.

(Lou looks up from her work and stands up.)

JENNIFER BRANDT: He mumbles and he can't focus on anything for more than a second or two.

LOU: It's post-traumatic stress. He's going to need a lot of time and attention. You can't give up hope.

JENNIFER BRANDT: He used to be so brilliant. He used to talk to me about everything. And now he doesn't even know I'm his wife. He knows you, though.

LOU: Can we not do this?

JENNIFER BRANDT: You had your time with him and then he chose me. I guess we'll never really know whether you did everything you could to save him or not.

LOU: I left him there because I believed he was dead.

JENNIFER BRANDT: Well, he wasn't. At least not then.

(Jennifer turns and leaves. Lou sits down. On the monitor in front of her is ALEX BRANDT'S file and photo. Lou stands and walks over to the shelf. She picks up a small wire object and twirls it around in her hands.)

(She remembers ... )

WHITE FLASH TO:

LEGEND: BELGRADE, SERBIA 1998

FADE INTO

[EXT. BUILDING - DAY -- PAST]

(Lou is briefing her team.)

LOU: Reyack had his meeting with four of his lieutenants in the Gdansk hotel this afternoon. Alex will sweep the ground for PMs and incendiary devices at oh-one-thirty. I want a unit on the stairs oh-two-hundred hours everybody moves in.

ALEX BRANDT: I got a question, Bullet.

LOU: Anybody here named "Bullet"?

ALEX BRANDT: Officer Beckett, these four guys. What's their classification?

LOU: All Tier-1's. I want to bring them in alive. However, rules of engagement do apply.

(The team is dismissed. Lou walks around the desk and over to Alex Brandt. He knows what it's about.)

LOU: I need to talk to you.

ALEX BRANDT: It's a nickname.

LOU: It's a sign of disrespect.

ALEX BRANDT: Look, somebody's getting all worked up here over nothing.

LOU: If this situation makes you uncomfortable, I'd be happy to sign a transfer.

ALEX BRANDT: You want to get rid of me?

LOU: No. You're the best weapons tech we got, but I will not allow our feelings to interfere with this mission.

ALEX BRANDT: (smiles) So, you still have personal feelings for me?

LOU: Alex, it's been over a year. I'm fine. Is this going to work out or not?

ALEX BRANDT: I don't see why it shouldn't. (Lou nods.) You want a kiss for luck?

LOU: I suggest you get back to your wife.

WHITE FLASH TO: END OF FLASHBACK.

[INT. NSA - LOU'S OFFICE - DAY - PRESENT]

(Lou looks at the object in her hand. There's a knock on the door.)

(She looks up and sees Kyle and Diane walk into the office.)

LOU: Yes.

KYLE: Diane wants to talk to us.

(They walk up to her desk.)

DIANE: (clears throat) Have either of you noticed anything unusual lately?

LOU: Such as?

DIANE: Well, such as ... okay, I have this espresso maker and only Jake knows how to make it work and it came on. By itself.

(Lou looks at her. Kyle watches Lou's reaction.)

DIANE: I know. I know how it sounds, but there's also doors are opening and closing on their own and my cell phone, it rang and it made this terrible noise - and this - (She opens her phone and hands it to Lou.) -- is the message that appeared on the screen.

(The message is: ZT408-90.)

LOU: This mean anything to you?

(Kyle shakes his head.)

LOU: (to Diane) You think Jake is doing this?

DIANE: I think that he's trying to use his interface abilities to communicate with us. With me.

LOU: He's in a coma, Diane.

DIANE: Yes, but I've been monitoring the nanites and I've noticed some low- level activity enough for him to communicate if he wanted to.

KYLE: Then, why doesn't he just type something out on the computer?

DIANE: (sighs) Because he's on so much morphine, I don't think that he can put together a sentence. At least, not consciously.

LOU: But you think that he's trying to communicate subconsciously.

DIANE: Yes. Maybe. I don't know.

LOU: Well, I want to believe you. We both want to believe you, but

(Lou walks around the desk and over toward Diane.)

(The small security camera on her desk moves with her.)

[SECURITY CAMERA POV]

(The monitor is on Lou, Diane and Kyle.)

LOU: (garbled) ... are you sure he's doing this ...

[RESUME POV]

(The security camera remains on Lou, Diane and Kyle.)

LOU: ... or do you just wish that he were?

DIANE: Well, I really wish he were.

(Diane turns and leaves the office. Lou goes back behind her desk.)

KYLE: Lou? What do you make of that?

LOU: I don't know.

(A message appears on Lou's monitor. It reads: Director Beckett, Your presence is required in the recovery room.

LOU: That's Jake's nurse. She wants to see me.

(Lou heads out the door.)

DISSOLVE TO:

[INT. NSA - RECOVERY ROOM - DAY]

[INT. NSA - HALLWAY TO RECOVERY ROOM - DAY]

(Lou steps out into the hallway.)

BEN WILTON: Lou.

(Lou turns around and finds Ben Wilton right behind her.)

LOU: Hey, what are you doing here?

BEN WILTON: I want to see Jake. Maybe, try and talk to him. They say that people in a comas can hear you. We've only served together for a few days, but, I can see what he's left behind and I'm not sure that's a void I can fill.

LOU: Well, maybe you won't have to. I think you make a great team.

BEN WILTON: Thank you.

(Lou takes a step toward the retina scanner. Ben offers.)

BEN WILTON: I've got it.

(Ben leans into of the retina scanner. A red laser beam shoots out and hits Ben straight in the eyes. Ben cries out and falls to the floor.)

LOU: Ben!

(Lou kneels down to check on Ben. She rolls him over and finds his right eye fried.)

LOU: Ben! Oh!

(Lou looks around the hallway for help.)

[SECURITY CAMERA POV]

(Security video top view down of Lou kneeling next to Ben Wilton's dead body.)

FADE OUT.

FADE IN.

[EXT. NSA BUILDING (STOCK) - DAY]

[INT. NSA - HALLWAY -- DAY]

(Investigators are at the scene photographing and taking evidence around Ben Wilton's body.)

(Diane closes her palm pilot and shakes her head.)

(The Engineer reports to Lou, Kyle and Valerie Warner.)

TECH: We think that the normal feed bypass light intensity monitors. Once the amplifiers kicked in, that kind of light is no longer biometric.

KYLE: What is it?

TECH: Infrared. And when that happens, all bets are off.

LOU: Sabotage?

TECH: I - think so. Yes, definitely.

VALERIE WARNER: You're certain.

TECH: Well, an accident for this kind of device is a diode shorting out. Not this. I just don't know how they did it. The unit's sealed. I don't see how anybody could get into the system. And even if they did, there's security code, password ...

VALERIE WARNER: I want you to talk to every manufacturer who so much put a wire on that thing. I want to know who did this.

(Valerie Warner leaves. Kyle and Lou both look at Ben.)

CUT TO:

[INT. NSA - ALEX'S ROOM -- DAY]

(Alex is getting dressed, while Jennifer rambles nervously about Ben.)

JENNIFER BRANDT: I don't care what they say, this place is not safe. That man just had his ... He was killed right down the hall. I'm getting you out of here, Alex. You'll feel much better when we get home. (beat) We both will. Alex? We're going now, okay?

ALEX BRANDT: I want to see Lou.

(Jennifer closes her eyes and sighs. She grabs her bag.)

JENNIFER BRANDT: Suit yourself.

(Jennifer leaves.)

CUT TO:

[INT. NSA - DINING ROOM -- DAY]

(Open on the security camera tucked away in the corner of the room. It's angled toward Lou and Diane. Kyle is standing nearby. They're both whispering.)

DIANE: You don't' really believe that Jake did this to Ben, do you?

LOU: You said it yourself. He was trying to communicate with us.

DIANE: Yeah, communicate with us. Not kill us.

LOU: Ben was a threat to Jake's position. If Jake started acting up subconsciously, then ...

KYLE: That code you thought Jake sent you on your phone ZT480-90? It's the bypass for the retinal scanner in the medical wing.

DIANE: (sighs) Oh, no. No. He did not do this.

KYLE: He sent the code.

DIANE: Yeah, but, you know what? Maybe he was trying to stop it. Jake has been trying to say something to us, but he is on so many drugs. And there's something new that I've been working on - a drug called Naloxone. It's an opiate antagonistic. It counteracts morphine.

LOU: And you think giving Jake this drug will help him communicate more clearly.

DIANE: Yes.

KYLE: Do we want him communicating any more clearly?

DIANE: I think we need to move him somewhere outside the NSA.

KYLE: Where?

LOU: Somewhere away from electronic equipment where he can't hurt anyone and Diane can test out her theory.

KYLE: What are the downsides to using this drug?

DIANE: Well, he-he-he could have a pain crisis. I mean he could die.

(Lou and Kyle nod.)

DISSOLVE TO:

[INT. NSA - RECOVERY ROOM - DAY]

(Jake is in the liquid tank still unconscious.)

[EXT. NSA BUILDING (STOCK) - NIGHT]

[INT. NSA - HALLWAY - NIGHT]

(Alex walks through the hallway. He pushes Lou's office door open and walks inside. He looks around, but heads for the desk where he takes a seat.)

(He looks around the office and sees the small object on the desk. He picks it up. Obviously, its something familiar and recognizable to him.)

(He remembers ... )

FADE TO WHITE:

[EXT. VIENNA BUILDING (STOCK) - NIGHT -- PAST]

LEGEND: VIENNA, 1997

(The Hotel room door opens. Both Alex and Lou step in quickly, their guns raised. They check out the rooms.)

(Alex opens the bathroom door and checks it out.)

ALEX BRANDT: Clear?

LOU: Clear.

(Alex drops his weapon and looks at Lou.)

ALEX BRANDT: Why don't' you drop your weapon?

(Lou tosses the gun on the middle of the bed.)

ALEX BRANDT: Now, drop the dress.

(Lou smiles and undresses. Alex closes the front door.)

(He tosses his gun on the middle of the bed. It lands on Lou's gun.)

(They kiss.)

WHITE FLASH TO:

[INT. HOTEL ROOM - NIGHT - PAST]

(Lou and Alex are lying on the bed.)

ALEX BRANDT: Maybe he dislocated something, Bullet. But in a good way.

(He sits up.)

ALEX BRANDT: Oh, all right. So. This is perfect. You and me.

LOU: But?

ALEX BRANDT: Oh, but nothing. I know a way to make it more perfect. I want us to go away together.

(Lou smiles and kisses him.)

LOU: We're always going away together.

ALEX BRANDT: No, I mean, leave the NSA. The bureaucracy of life. We could go to- we could go to South America, Asia. But I have a lot of expertise. Security companies are always hiring ex-agents and for great money.

LOU: Hmm. Money would be nice, but I don't want to work security.

ALEX BRANDT: Because you love the NSA. It's not working for me.

(He gets up off the bed.)

LOU: (sighs) What's this all about?

ALEX BRANDT: I put in for Director of Field Operations. I didn't get it. I am never moving up.

LOU: I didn't know you put in for that job.

ALEX BRANDT: Well, it was going to be a surprise.

LOU: Alex, they offered me the job.

ALEX BRANDT: Oh. You didn't take it?

LOU: I already did. I was going to tell you when it became official.

ALEX BRANDT: Guess our going away together. That's not going to happen.

LOU: Alex, I like you a lot, I ...

ALEX BRANDT: ... but not as much as the NSA. I guess you're a little more driven than I am.

LOU: Hmm. No, I'm a lot more driven than you are. I've had to be. What if you'd've gotten the job and I said, don't take it, let's go away somewhere, instead?

ALEX BRANDT: That would be entirely different.

(She chuckles wryly.)

ALEX BRANDT: What?

LOU: You're funny. You're smart. But you're not very nice.

WHITE FLASH TO: END OF FLASHBACK.

[INT. NSA - LOU'S OFFICE - NIGHT - PRESENT]

(Alex puts the small wire object back on Lou's desk.)

CUT TO:

[INT. NSA - HALLWAY - NIGHT]

(Alex leaves Lou's office and walks down the hallway.)

(He walks through some doors and they automatically close ON him. Alex squeezes out from between the doors and continues on.)

(He walks down the hallway rubbing his sore arm.)

(He reaches the elevator doors.)

[SECURITY CARMERA POV]

(Alex uses his card key and swipes the lock on the door.)

[RESUME POV]

(The elevator bell dings and the doors open.)

[SECURITY CARMERA POV]

(Alex steps into the elevator and goes over to press the button.)

[RESUME POV]

(The elevator jerks and lunges as it starts to plummet down.)

(It picks up speed and suddenly stops.)

[SECURITY CARMERA POV]

(Alex hits the floor with a thud.)

FADE OUT.

FADE IN.

[INT. NSA - RECOVERY ROOM - DAY]

(Jake is in the liquid tank still unconscious.)

(Valerie Warner and Dr. Vikram Taleek stand next to the tank. Lou and Diane rush through the hallway and into the room.)

LOU: What are you doing?

(Kyle walks into the room behind them.)

VALERIE WARNER: Why do I think that you already know the answer to that question? Dr. Taleek?

LOU: Wait. Wait. You have no proof that Jake is responsible.

VALERIE WARNER: Agent Foley interfaced with our system and killed Ben Wilton. And thirty minutes ago, he almost killed Alex Brandt. An electrical surge originating from this room sent one of our elevators plummeting six stories.

KYLE: If Jake is dong these things, and we have no concrete evidence that he is, he has no control.

VALERIE WARNER: And unlike you, I find that cause for alarm. Your agent is a threat to the lives of everyone in this building and Executive Director, it is my duty to take immediate action. (To Dr. Taleek) Take him off life support.

DIANE: No. No.

(Diane moves to plead with Valerie Warner.)

DIANE: All we have to do - we can move him to a secure location.

VALERIE WARNER: Tell me. With his abilities, what location did you have in mind? Dr. Taleek

LOU: Wait. Just wait. Jake is a member of this team and if this decision is final, then let my team handle it.

VALERIE WARNER: Under our supervision.

(Kyle steps forward.)

DIANE: Dr. Taleek, please turn off the ventilator.

(Dr. Taleek presses the buttons. Diane leans over the tank to talk with Jake.)

DIANE: Jake? We're going to shut off the ventilator now, so that you can breathe on your own, okay?

(Diane deliberately reaches for the bottle of Naloxone on the tray next to the Morphine bottle.)

DIANE: I'm preparing a strong shot of morphine so that you won't feel any more pain.

(Diane fills the syringe and injects the IV tube.)

DIANE: Good-bye, Jake.

(Lou and Kyle watch closely.)

(Suddenly, Jake starts to have seizures, his body thrashes in the liquid.)

(The heart monitor flatlines.)

DR. VIKRAM TALEEK: Time of death is ...

(Dr. Taleek looks at the clock. It appears to read, 8:15, but before he can actually call it, everything in the room powers down completely.)

VALERIE WARNER: What just happened?

(The lights in the room go out. The alarms start blaring. Everyone looks around the room.)

DIANE: (hopeful) It's Jake.

(Jake's eyes open.)

LOU: Whatever he's got to say, he'd better say it now.

(Suddenly everything powers up again, this time on overload.)

(The thermometer near the bed rises and explodes. A piece of glass shatters and cuts Valerie Warner on her cheek. She screams.)

(The water in the tank starts bubbling.)

VALERIE WARNER: He's going to kill us all.

LOU: Get out! Get out! Everybody out!

(Everyone heads for the door. Diane stops.)

KYLE: Let's go!

DIANE: Wait! What about Jake?

LOU: Get out!

KYLE: Lou, come on!

LOU: I'm staying!

(Kyle and Diane are the last to get out of the room. The door closes behind them. Lou stays inside the room, edging her way closer to Jake.)

(The flatline heart monitor goes off.)

[INT. NSA - SAT OPS - NIGHT - CONTINUOUS]

(Valerie Warner, Kyle and Diane exit into the hallway.)

VALERIE WARNER: (to Susan Carver) Lower the blast doors on the East corridor. Initiate safe room procedures. I want the burn unit contained.

TECH AGENT SUSAN CARTER: What's going on?

VALERIE WARNER: Do it.

TECH AGENT SUSAN CARTER: Yes, Ma'am.

(She initiates the command into the computer. It flashes red. It's not responding.)

TECH AGENT SUSAN CARTER: Main power to burn unit disabled. Overriding backup generator.

DIANE: You need to give him a chance.

VALERIE WARNER: You set him up for one day. (to Susan Carver) Shut it down.

TECH AGENT SUSAN CARTER: I can't. Nothing's responding.

(The schematics on the wall monitor starts to receive interference.)

KYLE: It's Jake. He won't let us.

(The monitor receives white static as something interferes with reception.)

VALERIE WARNER: (firmly) Somebody take a fire axe to the trunk line. Just cut the damn power.

[INT. NSA - RECOVERY ROOM - NIGHT -- CONTINUOUS]

(Lou is alone in the room with Jake. The water in the tank is bubbling.)

LOU: Jake. Jake, if you can hear me. I'm the one responsible for putting Ben on the team and for sending you into that mission. If you're angry about that, I accept that. But, please. Please, don't hurt anyone else.

[INT. NSA - SAT OPS - NIGHT - CONTINUOUS]

(The wall monitor continues to receive static.)

VALERIE WARNER: I want control restored immediately.

TECH AGENT SUSAN CARTER: (shakes her head) It's out of my hands.

(The image on the wall monitor slowly clears and security camera footage is being played.)

VALERIE WARNER: What's that?

DIANE: Jake. Wait, wait. I think Jake wants us to see this.

(On the video, Alex Brandt talks with Jennifer.)

ALEX BRANDT: (from video) Lou-Lou-Lou did this to me. Lou did this to me.

Cut to:

ALEX BRANDT: (from video) She left me. Destroyed me.

VALERIE WARNER: What?

(The image is being played on all the monitors. Agents in the room crowd around various workstations to watch.)

[SECURITY CAMERA POV]

(Alex Brandt sits behind a laptop and works on the computer.)

[RESUME POV]

KYLE: He sabotaged the retinal scanner.

(The security camera video footage fades to white and new images appear on the monitors of Alex walking into Lou's office.)

VALERIE WARNER: Why would he try to kill Ben?

KYLE: He wasn't. He was trying to kill Lou. Ben just got there first.

(The images on the monitor show Alex Brandt sabotaging Lou's keyboard.)

KYLE: (to nearest agent) Get a bomb disposal unit to Lou's office right now. Brandt's rigged the device in her keyboard.

DIANE: Then what happened in the elevator - Jake was trying to protect Lou.

(Suddenly, everything powers down and goes black.)

VALERIE WARNER: Where's Brandt now?

[INT. NSA - RECOVERY ROOM - NIGHT - CONTINUOUS]

(Jake is in the liquid tank. The liquid around him bubbles. Alex Brandt uses a chair and crashes through the glass in the door to the Recovery Room.)

(Lou turns around as he grabs her.)

ALEX BRANDT: You left me!

(He grabs her and tosses her across the room into a tray near the wall. She falls to the floor. Alex steps up to her and grabs her shoulder. Lou stands and swings, hitting Alex in the face.)

(He throws a punch at her. She blocks it and punches him in the face. Alex falls into a nearby cart. While down, he picks up a knife. He swings it at her.)

(Lou barely dodges it.)

(Alex's knife hand is over the tank. Jake's hand reaches up through the liquid and grabs Alex's knife hand. He twists forcing Alex to drop the knife into the tank.)

(Jake sits up.)

(Before their very eyes, his burn wounds on his right arm holding Alex's knife hand start to heal fast and spontaneously.)

(Lou sees her chance and before Alex can reach for another weapon from the floor, she brings her clasped hands down on his back knocking him out. He falls flat to the floor unconscious.)

(Jake and Lou look at each other.)

(Exhausted, Jake falls back into the liquid tank.)

CUT TO:

[EXT. NSA BUILDING (STOCK) - DAY]

[INT. NSA - JAKE'S RECOVERY ROOM - DAY]

(Diane tries to spoon feed Jake some blue jello while Kyle and Lou watch.)

DIANE: C'mon. You have to eat something.

JAKE: Couldn't I have something a little less -

DIANE: -- gelatinous?

JAKE: Exactly.

KYLE: We'll get you something.

JAKE: Hmm.

LOU: How are you feeling?

JAKE: Pretty sore. Free. I felt trapped in there like a cripple.

DIANE: Well, yeah. You pretty much were.

JAKE: Well, not physically ... in my head. Thanks for getting me out.

DIANE: Yeah. I wish that I'd done it sooner.

(Lou and Kyle turn to leave.)

CUT TO:

[INT. NSA - HALLWAY OUTSIDE JAKE'S ROOM - DAY - CONTINUOUS]

(Lou steps out into the hallway and makes her way to Alex's room. She looks in and finds the nurse fixing up the empty bed.)

(Lou leaves.)

[INT. NSA - LOU'S OFFICE - DAY]

(Lou walks into her office.)

JENNIFER BRANDT: (o.s.) They took him away.

(Lou looks up as Jennifer Brandt walks into the office.)

LOU: There won't be any criminal charges. He's not fit to stand trial. He'll receive the best psychiatric treatment available. We take care of our own, Jennifer.

JENNIFER BRANDT: Why did he do it?

LOU: The doctors call it displacement. He blamed me for leaving him behind. And over the years, it became a fixation - a way for him - maybe the only way for him to get through the daily hell that he went through in that prison.

(Absently, Jennifer picks up the small wire object on Lou's desk.)

JENNIFER BRANDT: I blamed you, too. He never said anything, but I could tell. He never really got over you. I hope you can forgive me for that.

LOU: There's nothing to forgive.

(Jennifer puts the small wire object back down on the desk.)

JENNIFER BRANDT: Good-bye, Louise.

(Jennifer turns and leaves the office. Lou sits down in her chair. She reaches for the small wire object on her desk. It's a champagne wire, the wire that seals the champagne cork in the bottle. It's twisted and together with a beer bottle cap is made into the shape of a small wire chair.)

(She looks at it and remembers ... )

FADE TO WHITE:

[INT. BAR - NIGHT -- FLASHBACK]

LEGEND: GEORGETOWN, 1994

(Alex Brandt walks into the bar. Lou is sitting at the counter playing with her drink.)

ALEX BRANDT: Celebration for one?

LOU: It's not time to celebrate. It's only the beginning.

ALEX BRANDT: You've got to learn to take the opportunity when it presents itself. Graduating at the top of the class -

LOU: -- Well that and a nickel will get you a beer.

ALEX BRANDT: Well, at those prices, we should be drinking (loudly to the bartender) champagne.

(She laughs.)

(The bartender puts the champagne wire down on the counter between them as he opens the champagne bottle.)

LOU: Agent Brandt. The NSA frowns upon the fraternization between team members.

(Alex picks up the wire cap and starts fiddling with it.)

ALEX BRANDT: (counters) The NSA frowns upon heavy drinking. Doesn't mean that we're not going to do any.

LOU: I take my responsibilities very seriously.

(The bartender opens the champagne bottle with a pop.)

ALEX BRANDT: So, I've noticed. (The bartender starts filling up the glasses.) Maybe a little too seriously.

(Alex puts the wire down and it looks like a small chair. Lou smiles and picks it up.)

LOU: Neat trick. You must be the life of the party.

ALEX BRANDT: Like you'll ever know.

(He picks up his glass; she picks up her glass.)

LOU: God and Country.

ALEX BRANDT: Until something better comes along.

(They clink glasses and drink. Lou smiles at him.)

FADE TO BLACK.
